Hope For Peace: Mixed Medium with Shari Carroll
Happy Sunday everyone! It’s Shari here with a mixed medium project for you.
I’ve tried an old technique for painting using ointment or petroleum jelly to create a peeled paint look. This is the first time I’ve tried it and it was really fun to see what results I would end up with. I like it!!
I started with the Tim Holtz Idea-ology Frame. It comes in two pieces and is easy to decorate. I glued some papers papers down on the base piece using Soft Matte Gel medium.
The next step was to add some ointment or petroleum jelly in areas where I want my paint to resist. I added paint with a brush, let it dry then wiped with a towel. I repeated the steps with each color of paint, cleaning the surface with a baby wipe in between applications.
Once I had my paints the way I liked, I went to town adding a die cut globe, ephemera, flowers, quote and a few findings. Once I was done, I painted the frame piece black and glued it down to my collage.
I have a full process video for you which you can view below or on our YouTube channel HERE.

Amazing collage!
Beautiful. I could watch you every day creating your works of art.
Thanks for sharing this technique.
I love watching your mixed media projects they are always inspiring!! i wonder if maybe you could do a how to video and educate us newbies on what gesso, matte gel and 3D matte gel and so and are all used for? I know gesso is usually used for prepping the surface but I’ve seen it used for many other things in mixed media projects as well so a how to video would be most helpful. Thanks for sharing .
Beautiful mix media project!
That’s very cool and I’ve never seen the technique done with Vaseline. Thanks for sharing :-)
I always like what Shari does but I have not pushed myself into yet. There is some techniques u cam use on cards. I wish they would make a brush set for every paint, gesso we use instead of having to buy 10 sets to get one item.
Simply stunning!!!
I agree exactly with what the lady said before. I counted and I have 10 things out out of 15 go use so that runs into dollar signs. If she would want to show something that is a big hit now without playing that music while she does it would be okay to checkout to get started on because that is something u read everyday. I went to Hobby Lobby ad there was ladies looking and I saying I wished I could find some good Bible Journaling classes and kits to use. I have a friend that teaches youth girls to and have been trying to get her into this with them but you have the journal stuff but no videos of it. I do not want it to cost the group all their legs and arms. Can u not get into showing things and talking about it with the girls?
What a great project! I love that globe die!
Very nice project!
