Tim Holtz Linen: Painted Resist with Shari Carroll

Shari Carroll TH Journey 1

I’ve been at it again… playing with more of Tim’s amazing product. I’ve had the Textile Surfaces for a bit now and have had this technique in my head, it was time to do it! I love experimenting and wanted to do a resist on fabric!! I used the Tim Holtz Gothic Layering Stencil and Transparent Matte Texture Paste directly on to the linen. Once it was dry, I painted it with watered down Distress Paints.

I was all about embracing the white space on this project and chose to leave the die cut Wildflowers clean and simple. I used Evergreen Bough Distress Paint to cover the Alpha Parts message and added just a hint of Brushed Pewter Distress Paint for a little shine.

For additional texture and to frame my panel, I used added the leaf Industrious Border and corrugated from the Textured Surfaces with gesso.

This is a nice project to display in my studio as a reminder to Enjoy the Journey!

I’ve put together a full process video which you can view below or on our YouTube channel.

  1. This is beautiful and thanks for all the great inspiration and instruction…I learn so much about how to use the various paints and mediums from watching your videos. You could say they were PRICELESS!

  2. THIS is really lovely Shari! Your work is always wonderful and I don’t know why I am always surprised by each new project??? I guess it’s because I can’t imagine anything better but you manage to “up” the anti with each project!

  3. What a lovely home dec project. I love the way it turned out. Must try this technique. Thanks for the design ideas.

  4. Hello! What a cluster of texture and colour! I love how you’ve blended the colours for the background and the matte texture paste adds a bonus to it! I definitely need to try this! Btw, sometimes I want to use corrugated cardboard and can’t figure out how to, but yours is a good option that I will bear in mind for the future. Thank you very much for sharing it! Hugs, Luis

  5. HOW BEAUTIFUL SHARI! The texture paste looks like lace with it’s transparency! And the distress ink is GORGEOUS on here!!! JUST BEAUTIFUL!!!! ;)

  6. I will so have to try this technique – it’s lovely! I have quite a bit of linen from my cross stitching days.
