SSS_summerschool_blog_header_2014

Hello and welcome to the last day of summer school! I can’t believe how quickly the past week went! We hope you enjoyed all of the inspiration and ideas that our amazing teachers shared all week! There were so many great ideas of fun ways to use the new Teacher’s Pet collection! I can’t wait to make lunchbox notes and teachers cards this year!

Before we say goodbye to another year of summer school, we have one more amazing teacher with us today. Please welcome Mrs. Debby Hughes to the class to share an awesome school themed project with you!

Hi, Debby here and so excited to be joining you today for Summer School! I’m delighted that my youngest son will have a male teacher for the coming school year so I wanted to give today’s project a masculine edge. The new Hey Teacher stamp set and Teacher dies were just perfect for keeping things clean and simple – just like the guys like, right?

The main focus of the card is a blackboard created using the new Frames dies from the recent This is The Life release. The Frames dies cut a centerpiece and also a great little frame edge too. I cut the smallest frame in the set from Khaki and Black card and white heat embossed the ‘World’s Best’ from Hey Teacher before giving it the chalkboard look with some Unicorn ink. The ruler from the Hey Teacher set is stamped in Memento tuxedo black, Copic colored and trimmed out and acts as a base for the fabulous Teacher die-cut, which was cut from Lipstick Red card. The Frames dies came into their own again to cut two patterned paper pieces to mat to the Khaki card base.

To accompany the card, I made two more frames and added one to a ruled Moleskine notebook and the other to a humorous book on children’s silly written mistakes (Blackboard Blunders). I must admit that the blackboard cover of this book drew me to it but it is also a fun read.

I can’t believe that the schools here go back in little over a week so I better crack on with all those jobs that need doing before then and getting the school uniform up to date is top of the list; I’m sure the summer sun makes them grow a few inches each year! Have fun and enjoy what’s left of your summer although if you are like me then secretly you look forward to the new school year and all those brand new jotters and cute stationary!

I actually made a video of my project, gasp I know LOL. I really should make more videos and I’m glad that for today I managed to get my act in gear. ;)

Summer School wouldn’t be complete without the chance to win some crafty school supplies, right!?

Supplies

  1. One of my favorite memories of school was taking my first art class in 10th grade! We didn’t have much growing up so I was never able to do any extra curricular activities. So when they offered me art class in high school I jumped at the opportunity! I love art! It was one of the happiest times of my school years!

  2. Wonderful projects! Thanks for sharing! Have lots of great inspiration for this year. Favorite school memory? Has to be the fun I had being creative and making shadowboxes for my bookreports :)
    Have a great day!~kim

  3. Fun projects. It’s always great to see masculine cards. I have a fond memory of a science class field trip.

  4. First of all, I have to say that I LOVE Debby Hughes and her videos. So glad she is doing more of them. I adore her cards!
One of my favorite memories was when I was in 2nd grade. My teacher was a roly-poly woman who was both generous with her warm hugs and reading aloud. We even had a reading corner full of the most amazing books. This was in the early 60s before reading corners were popular. How I loved my teacher and her love of books. As a reader, I grew by leaps and bounds because of this wonderful lady who realized the value of sharing books with her students.

  5. I love the card ideas for teachers! My favorite school memories probably involve my time in grade school. Life was simple back then!

  6. Debbie’s video was great – she does an excellent job!
My favorite memory is my wonderful typing and shorthand teacher. Back in those days, we learned to type on manual typewriters – ancient I know.

  7. Hmm…even though I was, admittedly, “really good at school”, my favorite memories always happened after school or during tennis matches. School was just the place where you could find all of your friends in the same spot for a few hours.

  8. In fifth grade we were all assigned a kindergartener to be reading buddies. We would go down to the kindergarten area and read to them, so much fun!

  9. My senior year of high school we had a community learning class and I was stationed at our Senior Citizen center…..I got to craft with the people! What an ideal place to put me! I would go once a week for 8 weeks and we always did something different. Even the Senior Gentlemen would join us, depending on the project!

  10. Very cute card!! Loved school to learn and have good time with friends!! Loved history and English the most!! Sports too!

  11. I had some awesome elementary school teachers who really encouraged my love of learning!
Thanks for the chance to win some terrific prizes!!!

    1. As a teacher myself, this would be a wonderful gift to receive any time of year. I always love stuff that is handmade by students or parents! Also really like the frames die set and wood veneer stars!
My favorite teacher was Mrs.Parker in grade 5. I always wanted to earn another “badge” in her music class – probably because they were handmade. Oh, and Mrs.Percival in grade 3. I just remember her being so sweet.

  12. Fabulous card, Debby … so perfectly masculine! My greatest memories from school are ones of teachers who didn’t teach, but gave me the freedom to discover and learn! Anita :)

  13. Mrs. Floyd was a special teacher for me. I’m not sure of her actual title as she wasn’t a classroom teacher, but she had a Great Books club for us and encouraged us with reading. She would “spot” me in the hall and kept track of me even after I left elementary school.

Debby’s son’s teacher is going to love this. What a great masculine card.

  14. Awesome card! My best memory from school was my high school principal calling my house to tell me I’d won a big scholarship to go to university. So exciting!

  15. Yay! Thanks Debby! I’ve loved ledger/accounting paper. Fun seeing it on your card :)

Good luck to all the kiddos starting their new school year!

  16. My favorite memory of school was high school basketball games. Sitting on the sidelines, talking with friends and doing the half time show with my dance squad. Pretty cliche I guess but it was a great time in my life to remember. =)

  17. Love all the layering on this card and the tiny paper clip is so cute! I really liked all the teachers I had in elementary school, they were so encouraging and positive about education.

  18. My favourite memories from school were my special friends. I didn’t have many but the ones I did have were special to me.
Beautiful card. Great new collection. Thank you for sharing you’re great ideas on video.

  19. Hard to pick one favorite memory! In elementary school, I loved getting new spelling words every week – we had to write out the definitions and use each word in a sentence. Don’t know why, but I thought that was so much fun!

  20. Great projects … love the ruler. My favorite memory from school would be the annual carnival we had at the end of each school year … and my favorite part of that was the cake walk. In one of the rooms they had squares in chalk on the floor with numbers in them, and you would buy a ticket (for a dime) and stand on a numbered square. Then they would have these numbers in a bin and when all the squares were full, they would call out a number and that person would win a whole cake (cakes were homemade by parents in the PTA).

  21. I grew up in upstate New York-I live in IL now. In high school we had home ec and we took sewing and I made an outfit-pants, long vest and shirt and won 2nd place for my outfit. I loved sewing but have not kept up with it.

  22. My special memory is a dear Teacher that always was so sweet & caring to me, encouraged me to do things like drawing, reading out loud etc, etc & praised me when i achieved something special because i was extremely shy, her name was Susanna, Blessings for her always wherever she is!

  23. Very cool blackboard look for this card. Thanks for sharing how to achieve that look. One of my favorite memories of school was field day near the end of the school year when everyone would do silly events outside like three-legged races, etc.

  24. I loved recess, I liked playing on the tire swing the most. It’s fun to push my children on the tire swing now! That rule is adorable!

  25. Debbie is brilliant.! I just adore her and everything she does.. One of my favorite memories from school was in first grade, my uncle was dating my teacher. I rememebr him sending her flowers and watching her face light up. Knowing that my uncle was the one who was responsible for her face lighting up was priceless. Plus I always felt so special in that class because of the situation. To this day.. Almost 30 years later, my uncle still talks about dating her.
Thanks for the chance to win. Hugs

  26. Some of the things I remember most about the school was to start the year with any new exercise books, pencils, etc.

    1. As a recently retired elementary school teacher, I can tell you the start of every school year was so exciting…new things, new lessons, but mostly, new faces! My memory is too full (my 18 years of school {elementary, middle, high, college, and grad school!} + my 30 years of teaching) to pick any one thing!

  27. Wonderful teacher card and video tutorial! This is great because it could be used for a male or female teacher, but I love that you had a male teacher in mind. It’s too bad there aren’t more male teachers as I totally agree with you about the kids needing male roll models too. I was so blessed to have had an equal amount of male and female teachers, what a huge and wonderful impact they all had on me :) I wish each child could experience that.

  28. I was the first FFA member from
Clovis, New Mexico to go the
    national FFA convention and
sing in the choir! Had a fun
week, first time I flew also.
    Carla from Utah

  29. my favorite memory of school is my friend, mary, with whom i started kindergarten and we are still friends today (70 years later!)

  30. Great masculine card! The blackboard frame idea is so cool. I loved SSS Summer School. I wish mine only lasted a week. LOL

  31. Great video and projects. In my first year in secondary school, we did a biology project and I created an oystercatcher from clay that turned out really well. After the project was finished, the bird was put on permanent display in he biology classroom, which made me feel very proud whenever I looked at it in the years that followed.

  32. One of my favorite memories of school was buying school supplies every year. I would always get so excited about getting pretty pens and colorful and fun notebooks and folders. Even though it was sad that summer was ending it helped me get excited about school starting. And I have to say the technique she used to create a chalkboard effect is amazing!! Love the card!
