Mixed Medium Die Cutting Techniques with Shari Carroll

Welcome everyone!! We are already halfway through DieCember® can you believe it????

I have a couple die cutting techniques that I experimented with to create an awesome mixed medium background.  I cut out a couple snowflakes using laminating sheets and also Stick It adhesive sheets with watercolor paper for the others. I had in mind that the laminate snowflakes would resist the watercolor and the watercolor paper snowflakes would have darker edges where the paint would soak in. It WORKED!!!

Once I had my snowflakes cut out, I arranged them onto a watercolor panel and ran it through my die cut machine to press them in and to get a good seal.  I used some Tim Holtz Distress Resist spray for added snowfall effects and then I went about water coloring with blues and teals.

I allowed everything to dry and then mounted the panel onto a card base. The main snowflake on the card also uses Stick It adhesive but on the front side and was misted with Rock Candy Distress glitter using the Stampers Annonymous Glitter Duster. I love the amount of glitter that the duster delivers!!

To finish my card, I white embossed a greeting and added some beautiful gems from Prima. I’ve filmed the entire process which you can watch below.

  1. Beautiful colours and technique! A quick question – you mentioned placing the snowflakes onto the smooth side up watercolour background, but when you die cut the snowflakes, are they rough side or smooth side up? Many thanks!

  2. I could watch you watercolor all day, such beautiful results, again I have to say that I’m in love with the colors that you always choose. Loved that you turned over your focal point snowflake to sticky side up! Had not thought of that, duh. Thanks for your inspiring video as well as the project.

  3. Stunningly beautiful… Love the color and the watercolor resisted perfectly. Thanks for sharing and have yourself a Merry little Christmas.

  4. Well isn’t this a delightful technique! I would not have thought of laminate, but it worked amazingly. And I love the colors you used too. You are just a never-ending source of really fabulous ideas.

  5. Awesome! Using the various materials and media with the watercoloring has resulted in a truly beautiful card. The video is filled with so much helpful information and demonstrations especially for how to use the various media. tfs

  6. Awesome card, and amazing techniques you have shared with us today. Love how different all of the flakes are, yet your watercolor background pulls it all together. Magnificent!

  7. I love the design and the die cutting techniques. My favorite part: the snowflakes you cut from the laminating sheets. Fabulous card! TFS

  8. I LOVE the blue and teal background. It looks so wintery and icy!! The glitter technique is one I need to try immediately! This card is one of the best of the season!!

  9. Beautiful – I can’t wait to get my own glitter duster. I love the soft spray of glitter it gives. I will have to try the die cut laminate, and I really like the pools of denser colour on the edges and the small spaces in the snowflakes – beautiful.
