Mixed Media with Gelatos

Hi readers! Happy Monday! We’re very excited to welcome special guest Rita Barakat to our blog who has made an adorable mixed media project in our honor using a variety of Faber-Castell products! Check it out!

As a guest post for Simon Says Stamp I thought it might be fun to include a little dog in my mixed media project! I drew this especially for the occasion!

After finishing my drawing, I add a very thin layer of Gesso, this provides a predictable surface to accept Gelatos or paint or whatever medium I choose as well as preserves my drawing underneath. Gelatos are fun to use, coloring right on the surface or using a small wet paint brush and dipping it into the Gelato.

After I painting my images I work on the background. (For me, if the image doesn’t turn out the background is unimportant so I do the image first.) I use a spatula to spread a layer of Whipped Spackle and Cement Texture Luxe. Both mediums can be mixed with Gelatos but I spread them onto the surface, allow them to dry, then I add color. For this project I used Squid Ink and Silver Gelatos.

  1. Awesome drawing. Never saw Gelatos used with a small paint brush to paint details. Great technique. Thanks for your talent.

  2. Love this project Rita and I learned something! I never realized you often draw your image and then work on your background. Intuitively I’ve wanted to do that, but I felt like I shouldn’t. I have no idea why I felt that way – you know I’m a rebel so why was I worried about that rule?! LOL!

I can’t wait to try this in my current art journal – the image then the background!

  5. Lovely work Rita. I’m always afraid to jump in and do a canvas. I don’t know why, it’s not like it needs to be perfect. I follow Faber Castell on You Tube and enjoy seeing your projects there. Thanks for sharing.

  6. Wow!! Awesome coloring!! I purchased some gelatos a while back and didn’t use them that much yet. You’ve inspired me to drag them out & play with them some more..thanks for the inspiration!!

  7. This is absolutely beautiful! I just purchased some Gelatos and have not used them yet – looking forward to trying them out – Need to get some Gesso
