Tim Holtz Palette Teal Slimline Cards by Paula Cheney

Hi friends! Happy Sunday! I’m so excited to welcome back special guest Paula Cheney and share 3 CARDS that she made showcasing the brand new Tim Holtz Palette fabric! YES! Fabric on cards! Read on to learn more and enjoy!

Hello friends! I’m happy to be sharing a few card ideas with you today, all featuring the beautiful Palette Teal fabric by Tim Holtz for FreeSpirit Fabrics. The three cards progress in complexity, starting with a no-sew option, one with simple stitching, and another that introduces a bit of easy quilting. The best part? They’re all super doable and easily adaptable, even if you don’t own a machine. All three cards were made to fit the Simon Says Stamp Slimline Envelopes in Teal.  The perfect color envelope for all the Palette Teal fabrics!

Card 1 – No Sew

  1. Use a Tonic Precision Trimmer to cut 3 pieces of Distress Watercolor 3 7/8 x 9 1/4”. One piece will be used for each of the three cards.
  2. Cut a piece of Palette Teal Collage fabric the same size as the Watercolor paper. Use Collage Medium to adhere the fabric to the Distress Watercolor Cardstock.
  3. Add a thin layer of Collage Medium over the fabric.
  4. Once the Collage Medium is dry, use a Corner Chomper to round the corners of the card.
  5. Use a Crop-A-Dile to add an eyelet on the right end of the card.
  6. Add a few idea-ology embellishments – Flashcard, Cello Sticker Tape, Clippings and floral ephemera from the Field Notes pack.
  7. Cut 24” of string. Fold in half, then thread the string into the eyelet and tie a bow.  Cut 4 stamps from the Palette Teal Stamp fabric and sandwich together with the string ends in the middle. Once dry, trim any excess.

Card 2 – With Sewing

  1. Cut multiple 2” strips of Palette Teal fabrics.
  2. Use a Tonic Precision Trimmer to cut 2 pieces of Distress Watercolor 3 1/4 x 8 1/2”. One will be saved for card 3.
  3. Use Collage Medium to collage the strips of fabric to the card front.
  4. Trim away the excess fabric and add a layer of Collage Medium over the top.
  5. Once the Collage Medium is dry, go to the sewing machine and stitch along all edges of the fabric.
  6. Paint Collage Medium on the back of any fabric you wish to use as patches. I chose a block of stamps and a sentiment from Collage. Cut out once the Collage Medium is dry.
  7. Add the sentiment to a strip of Watercolor Cardstock, Adhere the sentiment and the stamps to the card front. Stitch in place to secure.
  8. Use Thin 3D Foam Squares to adhere the card front to one of the remaining 9 1/4” cards.
  9. Paint a Butterfly Adornment with Evergreen Bough Distress Paint. Once dry, sand with steel wool. Use the end of a small paint brush to make decorative dots with Crackling Campfire Distress Paint. Let dry.
  10. Adhere the butterfly with a Thin 3D Foam Square.

Card 3 – With Quilting

  1. Use Collage Medium to adhere Palette Teal Map fabric to the second piece of 3 1/4 x 8 1/2” Distress Watercolor.
  2. While the map fabric is drying, use a small paint brush to splatter a mix of Distress Ink Gathered Twigs and water over the last 3 7/8 x 9 1/4” card back.
  3. Once dry, center the smaller card with the map fabric on the larger splattered card. Stitch around the edge of the fabric card to secure the two cards together.
  4. Cut a small piece of Palette Teal Stamp fabric. Add cotton batting to the back and quilt between the stamp lines, both vertically and horizontally.
  5. Use one of the large heart wafer dies from the Simon Says Stamp “Love Notes” set to cut a heart shape out of a square of the quilted Stamp fabric. Yes, wafer dies can cut through fabric!
  6. Save the heart that was cut out, then cut one more from the Stamp fabric.
  7. Use Collage Medium to add the hearts to the card front.
  8. Cut a Watercolor Cardstock heart using the same die. Stamp a sentiment from the Stampers Anonymous ‘Note Quotes’ stamp set using Black Soot Archival Ink.
  9. Make another ink puddle (Gathered Twigs and water) to dip the heart into. Followed by a splatter of the ink/water mix. Let dry.
  10. Adhere the paper heart to the center space with Collage Medium. Add a Tiny Clip at the top of the square of fabric.

Thanks so much for stopping by, and thanks to Paula for being our guest!

  1. Finally, my most favorite color! Love what you’ve done, Paula. It’s inspiring to say the least.

  2. What beautiful cards! Paula is so talented. Sometimes when I’m feeling creatively blocked, I find doing something completely different helps me get my mojo back. Like, switching gears entirely. I’ll take a break and play the Dinosaur Game on Chrome for a few minutes, surprisingly, it helps. Seeing these fabric cards has definitely sparked some new ideas though. Thanks for sharing!
