Masking Paper + Techniques for Gorgeous Color in Your Background: Yippee for Yana

Hi friends! Please join me in welcoming back the oh-so-talented and amazing Yana Smakula! (Please note: our dear friend Yana is Ukrainian. To show support to our brothers and sisters in Ukraine, please see Yana’s post HERE.)

Hello, crafters, this is Yana Smakula for Simon Says Stamp! Welcome back for another Yippee For Yana video! When was the last time you used masking paper? It has certainly been awhile for me! I invite you to re-visit this fabulous tool and use it to add color to your backgrounds!

Begin working on your card by stamping the image. I’m working with the Black Eyed Susans stamp set and stamping the flowers to color as daisies. Stamp the same image onto masking paper (I’m using masking paper by Altenew, but many options are available in the Simon Says Stamp shop) and cut it out. Cutting the mask out is the most tedious part of this process, but believe me – it is so worth it! You’ll need a good pair of detail scissors and possibly a craft knife to get into the most detailed areas.

With the mask ready, apply it onto your stamped panel. You are now ready to add color to your background – use your inks and ink blending to create a colorful background. I opted for a light teal background for my white daisies and blended it using Simon Says Stamp Pawsitively Saturated inks in Mist and Dew. You can also add stamping and even splatter some ink at this point.
Once you are done creating the background carefully remove the mask. The mask can be used several times, so save it and place it onto a carrier sheet for future use.

Next, we have the stamped image in need of coloring. I used Copic markers and added color using Stippling and Flick Stroke techniques. I used the following marker colors:
- Y11, Y15, Y19, YR14
- YG03, YG17, YG67
- C1, C3, C5
Add a simple sentiment from the Simon Says Stamp Everyday EZ Strips and embellish the card with Aura sequins from Spellbinders.

I hope you’ll give masking a try! Have fun creating!
