Listen To Your Heart: Mixed Medium with Shari Carroll

Mixed Medium with Shari Carroll

Welcome to the blog and happy Saturday!

I have a mixed medium piece that I’ve created for today that features the Tim Holtz Etcetera Thickboard Tag. This is a great shaped base that can withstand paints, collage, and heavy mediums.

I started off by adding texture to the base by using wrinkled tissue paper and cheesecloth. I love texture and it adds interest to even a white background. From there I built up my layers.

Adding the pieces that bring this design together are all inspired by my mom. I started with the Feathered Wings and it progressed from there. The beautiful Baroque frame fit perfectly on top of the wings, and the corrugated heart inside of that. The mini pocket watch holds her name “Joy”, the #3 token represents myself and my two sisters, and finally the paintbrush because my mom was an artist and painter.

I think creating from your heart is an amazing experience. Your creations will have special meaning as well as beauty.

I filmed the full process in two parts; you can view the videos below or on our YouTube Channel. Part One, Part Two.

  1. What a beautiful piece with a special meaning. Thanks for sharing the process. I appreciate all the inspiration you provide.

  2. Exquisite project Shari, and I love that the elements have “meanings”. I loved the canvas collage you did a few years ago and this reminded of it :-)

  3. Wonderful tribute to your Mom. Now we get a glimpse as to where all your talent comes from. Just love it!

  4. Wow Shari! What an amazing keepsake representing your Mom and her daughters! Love the beautiful textures! Wonderful inspiration!

  5. Another amazing project Shari…I wish I had half your talent. How awesome to have picked objects that represent your Mom and family and use them in your project.
So very nicely done and thanks for the videos.

  6. Shari, This is AWESOME! I love the mixed media tag!
My grandaughter has “angel wings scars” on her back from multiple surgeries for titanium rib expanders and finally a spinal fusion surgery. She is quite the artist and in currently competing at the state level in high school for her clay entry. This makes me think of her!!!!

  7. Beautiful work. I miss the monthly Tim tags, so it is nice to see you are carrying on the tradition.

  8. Your talent never fails to blow me away. Especially when you creat things with your family in mind. How lovely!

  9. This is beautiful and honors your Mother’s memory beautifully! I love watching your creative process and though I don’t usually copy what you’re creating, I always learn something I can use in a project of my own. I must admit mine are much simpler, but you have great ideas and techniques that are so helpful. Thank you! :)

  10. so happy to take time out of packing and moving to watch Shari’s fabulous project-really cheered me up as missing my art-all packed up -thanks Shari awesome as ever!!
