For the Love of Fall: Art Journal

Happy Saturday everyone! It’s Shari here with an art journal page featuring some of the new Tim Holtz Distress Sprays. I had an excellent time creating this entry and even did some experimenting to discover a new technique! I love it when I try something new and it works out!

Shari Carroll Love of Fall 2

I started off by using the Reverse Damask and Falling Leaves stamps using Antique Bronze Distress paint. Then I used die cut tissue paper leaves as masks. I added color by using the Tim Holtz Distress sprays which resisted the paints. Do you see the faint leaves in the background from the tissue paper?

I used a couple layering stencils with Distress paint for an additional layer, then stamped more leaves using Wendy Vecchis’ Potting Soil Archival Ink, love this color and that it can be used on top of all my layers of inks and paints.

To finish things off, I sprayed some die cut leaves and paint my canvas letters to match the feel of the background.

I shot a video of my complete process, I hope it inspires you to try something new!

Thanks for stopping by today, have a great week-end!!!

  1. I love watching each and every art journal page you do Shari. You have really inspired me to just “play”….. can’t wait to try some of the techniques!

  2. I’m in love! This art journal page is AWESOME! I’m going to do this when I get all the supplies. I have most of the items needed. I started my first art journal in June. It’s been a slow-go but I’ve done 5 layouts. Thank you for your help. :-)

  3. I love the green background for fall! I keep wanting to do that but I always “fall” back to using yellows, oranges and browns. This is really inspiring :)

  4. I love the page! The best part about the creation of it was watching you experiment. Those paper bag leaves look real!

  5. Gorgeous page, Shari! Love the tissue paper technique. Always so fun to see you create. Thanks for the tutorial.

  6. So beautiful. Great page and technique. The sprays look awesome. I just love all the stencil work, masterful. Michelle t

  7. Awesome!! I love this background. And the paper bag leaves turned out amazing! I also loved the music on the video… I feel like I need to go watch some Charlie Chaplin now

  8. So much to take in. I love the experimentation, the way the tissue paper and paper bag (found) objects were incorporated in flawlessly. I’m a huge fan of leaves, so this theme was wonderful. The interactions of all the products is so fun to watch and the outcome exquisite! Thanks so much, Shari!

  9. amazing techniques! Loved the tissue leaves and die cut leaves – reminds me of being a kid collecting leaves and using them to decorate! Nice to see examples using the new distress sprays, as well. Nicely done, Shari!

  10. Wow! This is a fabulous page. I love the tissue leaf technique and the background on this is stunning. I can’t wait to try some of these great ideas. The paper bag leaves are a great idea and I’m probably going to use that same idea for some table décor for Thanksgiving. I missed some of the end of the video because the oven timer went off and I had to get the apple pie I was baking out, but I will view it again now. I love the rag time music, too! THANKS!

  11. Totally loved your page, loved the whole process, in fact I feel tempted to create some of my own art journaling pages after watching your videos! Thanks for sharing.
