Family Love Canvas

Welcome to the blog today everyone!

I have a special canvas project to share with you. What makes this so special is the thought that I put into it. I’ve added elements that represent things (or people) in my life.  I’ve gathered simple items to put together and placed them into groupings with meaning.  I’ve just recently become an empty nester… so this is my way of holding on, yet letting go.

To get things started, I used the Circles Circles stencil from Stencil Girls with Art Anthology Stucco rough texture paste on an 8″ x 10″ canvas board.  While that was drying, I took a walk out to the backyard and picked up a few twigs, ones that were as straight as I could find.  We have always enjoyed the outdoors and what better way to bring the outdoors in then to put them on a canvas! These represent my husband, our two boys and myself.  I’ve wrapped the bottoms with twine not just for texture, but to represent the ties we have with one another and our family’s history.

I mixed some paint and watered it down to create a wash of color. I allowed it to flow into the valleys of the stucco and dry completely before adding some corrugated cardboard and the “trees”. One of the twigs had a little stem coming out from it which was perfect to hold a token of LOVE!

To finish the canvas off, I added clear buttons that are threaded with twine. These stand for the support and inspiration of other family members that are with us or who have come before us, our roots! Have you ever tried creating this way? A project just for you? I love doing this.

Thanks for stopping by today, I hope I have given you some inspiration to start your own canvas. Have a fantastic crafty week-end!

  1. Shari, I adore this! It’s not only beautiful, but the meaning behind it is soooo special! Once again, I find myself so grateful for designers/artists like you, who share their talent! Thank you! ♥♥♥

  2. Once you read the narrative you understand why this is such an important piece.
thanks for sharing a part of your life.

  3. You are very creative. Really like the string thing. I know the feeling of empty nest. For me it happened 7 years ago. There are still days when I miss the wee ones running underfoot and their laughter.

  4. I love the stenciled stucco background you gave to your canvas. This is a cool representation of the appreciation you have of your family. It reminds me of the family tree. After all, the four of you are branches in your tree. The twine looks so nice around the bottom of the twigs and I like the charm. The addition of color in the background makes the canvas come alive. I enjoyed seeing how you blended the colors to try to get the color of the towel. It made the video REAL, showing what has to be done in order to achieve the appearance desired. Thank you for teaching and inspiring us.

  5. Very cool!!! I love your project and it’s meaning. Thank you for videotaping this. I was very happy to watch you mix colors!!

  6. This is a beautiful way to capture the feeling of empty nest. I love the elements and the way you placed them. It’s been several decades since we became empty nesters. I wish it were easier, but I still miss our kids something awful :) and wish they could have remained little for just a while longer. Hugs to you ♥

  7. Such a sweet idea! I have 2 boys too, the oldest being college-aged. I have a few years before the youngest leaves, but I can get teary-eyed thinking about it!

  8. Shari is truly a blessing to all of us and this mixed media is wonderful as are all her creations. TFS!!!

  9. This is such an amazing piece of art! My youngest is on her way to college about 2000 miles away. I want to make something for her to take. You have inspired me to do this. Hugs, Robin

  10. Just beautiful and so meaningful, too. I’m so impressed with your talent and love seeing you create.

  11. What a lovely project, and so personally meaningful! I have a difficult time creating a project with images which are not meaningful to me. For instance, purchasing/using a random vintage image of some unknown person in a project instead of using an old snapshot of a relative does.
