Easy Teachers Gifts: Quote Magnets

Hi everyone, Anna-Karin Evaldsson here with you today! I am so happy to be sharing a fun and easy tutorial. I am always thinking of different gift ideas and last week I needed teachers’ gifts. I wanted to highlight specific quotes, and almost made notebooks, but they got notebooks last year, so I thought it was time for something else. Tim Holtz’s Lace Baseboard Frames happened to be lying on my desk right in front of me, and I got the idea of using them to make magnetic ornaments.

I made two magnets and you can easily change these by using different quotes, colors and embellishments. If you don’t want to make a magnetic ornament, you can just skip the magnet and turn the panel into a wall-hanging, card, or a notebook cover. This is an easy project with fun techniques using media such as crackle paste and embossing powders.

  • Start by choosing two frames, and look through Tim Holtz’s Journal Cards to find cards that fit your theme. The journal cards are gorgeous, making it hard to choose. It is always a good idea to place the stamp on top, to make sure it will fit.
  • I ended up picking these two cards, since my magnets were teachers’ gifts, and there were school-related items on these cards. I particularly like the ‘Book No 1801’ in the upper right corner.
  • Smear Ranger’s Opaque Crackle Texture Paste on the frames with a palette knife, varying the thickness. The thicker the paste, the larger the cracks.
  • Leave to dry and cracks will form. Paint with watered-down Distress Paint.
  • When the paint is dry, dry brush a little acrylic paint on the frames. I used Dina Wakley’s Rosy paint for the pink frame, and her Ancient paint for the brown frame.
  • Die cut gears using Tim’s Industrial die.
  • Apply Ranger’s Emboss It Dabber to the gears, sprinkle with Mixed Media powders and emboss. Be very careful not to burn yourself. Do not touch the melted powder until it is completely cool.
  • Color Gumdrops by adding a drop or two of alcohol ink to them.
  • Glue the journaling card to the back of the frame with Matte Medium. Add a magnet at the back. You can also use a magnetic sheet. I later wrote messages at the back of the ornaments.
  • I stamped a bike under the quote on the second ornament, which fitted well with the embossed gears.
Here you can see the metallic effect on the frame a little better.
I just love the crackled effect on the frames!
The Mixed Media powders give a really cool effect.

I hope this tutorial inspired you to make some magnets, or to use crackle paste. Thank you so much for looking, happy summertime crafting!

  1. I love this project – those are great frames. I love all the texture and I was always a bit iffy about the tinsel embossing powder- I tried another brand and did not really like it, but you have sold me on trying the Ranger ones!
