Art Journaling: Abstract Painted Backgrounds

Welcome everyone!!! It’s Shari Carroll here with an art journal feature where I’m trying out painting an abstract background. I think I’m hooked!!!

I love Dina Wakley for her easy style, dry brush techniques, and let it go attitude. So… I’m channeling her for this page. In her teachings, she talks about focal and starting points and ways to just get the paint on the paper or canvas. I’ve chosen the “cross” and have followed it quite literally in this design.

I’ve always wanted to able to “just let go”, the dry brush technique is exactly what I needed to try. I love the areas where the brush skips over the paper leaving a nice textured look.

This was fun, and as you can see in my video below, the painting went really fast!  I might just keep this smaller journal for practicing and trying more painted backgrounds so I can track my progress.

I hope I’ve given you some inspiration to pull out your journal, paints and just GO FOR IT!!

  5. I love this Shari and I am totally inspired to FINALLY bite the bullet (so to speak) and start a 30 Day Color Challenge art journal!

  6. Every time I see an art journal post I vow to start my own — hasn’t happened yet, but it’s definitely on my “to do” list. This is such a lovely project and the abstract background is gorgeous.

  7. Wow Shari! I could watch you work for hours! Thanks for always giving me courage to create. You have a lovely way of motivating me to touch the blank page. -And spray E6000, I have to try it!

  8. This is one of those that I just don’t get. I cannot follow the process of such mixed media and having it be so pretty! This is how I make mud. Shari makes art, beautiful art! Gotta love that gal!
