Fluid Acrylic Pouring: Mixed Medium with Shari Carroll

Mixed Medium with Shari Carroll

Hello everyone and Happy Saturday!! I have something for you today that I’m so excited to share. I’ve played around with the technique of Fluid Acrylic Pouring and am so excited to say that we now carry an Alchemy Starter kit from IndigoBlu!! You’re going to love this!!

So…what is Fluid Acrylic pouring? It is a form of painting where you mix your paints with a medium that thins them and allows them to flow, then you pour the paint mixture onto your canvas. It is really fun and addictive!! You never know what result you’ll get!

To start the process of doing a pour, you mix the paints with a pouring medium such as Go-Flow (which is included in the starter kit). The suggested ratio is 2:1 Go-Flow to paint. The mixture should be about the consistency of Honey. It should come off your mixing stick in an even stream.

The sample I created is using a “Dirty” pour. I added paints a little at a time into a cup. I placed the canvas panel over the opening of the cup and inverted them to where the cup was on top. After letting the paint settle for about 3-5 minutes, I lifted the cup and let the paint spread over the panel. Interesting right?? It is so rewarding!!

I love how some of the colors mix and some stay separated. I let the canvas dry for a couple days before adding a couple coats of IndigoBlu Acrylic Lacquer. Without a coating the paint will look dull. The lacquer gives the canvas a nice glossy finish and the colors of the paint come back to life.  Once the lacquer was completely dry, I used the panel to create my project.

I used Tim Holtz Small Tattered Florals along with Wildflower Thinlits dies to create the arrangement. To finish off my canvas, I added Believe from Simon Says Stamp and finally some Tim Holtz linen ribbon.

I have filmed a video of how to use the contents of the IndigoBlu Alchemy kit, you can watch the video below or on our YouTube channel HERE.

  1. So glad Indigo Blue has released this kit. This tutorial was so inspiring that I am going to give it a try!

  2. Just beautiful!! I’ve seen a few on YouTube before after Jennifer McGuire mentioned it and it does look addictive!! Yours looks just beautiful!! Looks like something you can hang in your home and be proud of!! I love it and I love the colors you used, I was kinda concerned with the brown and rust colors, but they turned out perfectly!! Love it!! Thanks for sharing!! I hope you share more!!

  3. Beautiful project Shari! I’ve seen videos of the acrylic pour, but fantastic to get instruction. I can see how it would be addictive (and messy) but so very fun.

  4. Such a pretty piece… I like this color combo! That pouring seems like it would be fun; just so amazing seeing the technique !
    !

  5. Shari, this piece is an absolute stunner! I have been hearing about this and have seen some pieces done on larger canvases but I had never seen the actual process and I have to say it was amazing to watch. Your colour choices were stunning together and the flowers you added to it was a gorgeous finishing touch. Beautifully done and thanks for sharing this. I enjoyed watching!

  6. Great video Shari! Love the result of the “dirty pour”! Amazing effects created with the Cell-u-like. The colours you chose look fabulous together. Very cool!

  7. Thanks so much for sharing the process! I love how it turned out! Beautiful background in my favorite colors! TFS

  8. I’ve heard of this technique, but only in passing, so I appreciate the in-depth explanation of how to use a kit/supplies. Your videos are always really interesting, Shari, because I never know what you’re going to do! Thanks for sharing this with us.

  9. Wow! This looks amazing, such a fun technique and I love how you finished the canvas off with the flowers, Cathy x

  10. I love the look of pouring and can’t wait to try it. I’m so glad Indigo Blu came out with this kit, it makes it so much easier for beginners. Your background is gorgeous. I don’t know if I could cover it up!

  11. I keep seeing ads for flow medium and references to ‘pours’ and have been too lazy (!) to look it all up! Thanks for your video – I feel very well informed now. Your canvas looks wonderful!

  12. I’ve been hearing a lot about acrylic pours but had no idea what they were – thanks for the great video!

  13. I have been so intrigued with this technique. How clever of IndigoBlu to provide a kit with all the ingredients. Shari, your color choices would be perfect for a canvas on my mantel – could you supersize it? :-) Love your finished piece!

  14. I love the more relaxed methods of
painting. You never know what you
are going to get but the end
result always seems to be fantastic.
    Have to try this one.
    thanks for sharing
