Weekender with Wanda – MFT Spotlight!

Hello there crafty friends! Happy Weekend, and welcome back to Weekender with Wanda! Thank you for all the support and all the great comments on my first post. I have written down your ideas and will be planning for us to have more fun in the months to come. Before we get started, I’d like to announce the Simon grab bag winner from last week: Greta H! Congratulations Greta – you will be getting an email soon!

Today’s edition of Weekender with Wanda is a company spotlight feature on My Favorite Things Stamps. They have some really great new items for the holiday season. I made a bright and cheerful holiday card using the new Snowflake Flurry stamp set as the main focus. For my card design layout I used one of my favorite products from MFT – their Blueprints Dies. The Blueprints dies are a fantastic way to make card layouts.

I stamped my snowflakes in Island Blue and Slate Gray inks, and then stamped my sentiment in a rich black ink. I added pearls to the white panel to add some shine! The fun part comes in putting it all together so easily with the Blueprint dies. For this card I used Blueprint #15. There are several styles of them and I wish I had them all! I used the MFT Farm Fresh Gingham 6×6 paper as my background layer. My card base is SSS Khaki cardstock. Then I stamped one little snowflake on a bright red heart for an accent.

The sentiment is from the Hand Lettered Holiday Stamp set and it is a must have for this season. I have already used this set so much. My white layer is popped up with foam squares, as is my banner and heart. The Blueprints Dies come with many different pieces to use as accents – so you can customize from card to card.

I thought it would be helpful for you to see the pieces in the Blueprints #15 Die Set – so here is a graphic. Here is a link to a YouTube video showing different card designs made with this set. Changing the colors of your paper and your stamps makes it new again each time.  1_301852_ZM

DIY Mercury Jars

Vintage + Holiday = a very happy me! How about you? I’ve always loved the look of mercury glass and thought the effect would look great with the Tim Holtz Mini Mason jars. I’ve seen a few tutorials on Pinterest and thought I’d give it a try. The trick to this technique is to use Krylon Looking glass spray paint on the inside of the jars followed by a vinegar mixture spray.

I’ve created three styles, one being natural with Linen Ribbon and Craft pinecones, then a bedazzled one using dangles of Holiday Idea-ology, and finally a jar using Poinsettia flowers die cut from Clearly for Art film.

I went with non traditional colors for my poinsettia using Pool and Aqua alcohol inks. I die cut the flower out from Clearly For Art film, colored them then heated with my craft tool to bend and shape.

This next one was super fun to create dangly pieces to hang from the ball chain. I used jump rings to add tokens and snowflake charms. I had my husband Tom drill a hole in the lid so I could add a faucet knob!

This last jar has a little more natural feel to it using Desert Storm card stock with the Tattered Pinecone die. I also glued on a metal wreath to the jar and added a jingle bell and a few gems.

I’ll be putting small battery votive candles in these to display in my home. As a note, once you use paints and products on the inside of the jars, they are no longer food safe. Also, be sure to use spray paints in a well ventilated area (I went outside). This Krylov Looking Glass paint is especially smelly while spraying, so use a mask if you’re sensitive. The results are amazing and it only take a few minutes!

I’ve made a video of how to create the mercury glass effect and instructions to create the poinsettia flowers. You can view it below or on our YouTube channel.
