Listen To Your Heart: Mixed Medium with Shari Carroll

Welcome to the blog and happy Saturday!
I have a mixed medium piece that I’ve created for today that features the Tim Holtz Etcetera Thickboard Tag. This is a great shaped base that can withstand paints, collage, and heavy mediums.
I started off by adding texture to the base by using wrinkled tissue paper and cheesecloth. I love texture and it adds interest to even a white background. From there I built up my layers.
Adding the pieces that bring this design together are all inspired by my mom. I started with the Feathered Wings and it progressed from there. The beautiful Baroque frame fit perfectly on top of the wings, and the corrugated heart inside of that. The mini pocket watch holds her name “Joy”, the #3 token represents myself and my two sisters, and finally the paintbrush because my mom was an artist and painter.
I think creating from your heart is an amazing experience. Your creations will have special meaning as well as beauty.
I filmed the full process in two parts; you can view the videos below or on our YouTube Channel. Part One, Part Two.

Chip and Dip Day + DIY Handmade Embellishments

Hello crafty friends! Happy National Chip & Dip day! Time to break out your favorite crunchy snack and a tasty dip… my go to chips are corn tortilla chips and some spicy salsa; what about you?
Since today’s post falls on Chip & Dip day, I thought it would be fitting to create something featuring chips and dip; or in my case, chips and salsa! In the video I have for you, I will be sharing how I made my own DIY embellishments to be the focal point of my card.
Its fun to come up with ways for how to use supplies I have on hand to recreate something in real life. I used Distress Inks to watercolor the chips; because the Distress Inks react so well with water, they create the perfect tortilla chip texture.
The salsa is my favorite part of this card for sure! With a bit of Texture Paste and Distress Ink refills, I was able to make some realistic-looking salsa that I spread onto the end of one of my chips. Using some sequins from Pretty Pink Posh, I added those into the “salsa” before it dried which look like little chili peppers.
The colorful card base was also really fun to make – and quite easy! I used two pieces of Post-It tape and masked off small diagonal sections to create a multi-colored background for my chips. I used Audrey Blue, Jellybean, Duckling and Orange Slush for the ink colors.

I hope today’s post has inspired you to look at your supplies creatively to make some fun DIY embellishments! Be sure to check out the video below to see how these chips and salsa came together!
