Studio Monday with Nina-Marie: Washi Tape Sun Catchers

Studio Monday with Nina-Marie

Hello everyone, it’s Nina-Marie back with you today and I am sharing a new DIY paper crafting project in celebration of National Craft Month! Have you ever noticed how pretty washi tape looks when light shines through it? It’s gorgeous effect! This made me think; how awesome would washi tape look as a DIY sun catcher? In a word, pretty!

I had a blast making these and really, you just need a few simple supplies I bet you already have on hand:

  1. washi tape (who doesn’t have a ton of this laying around??)
  2. a frame die of your choice (I featured the Wrapped Stitch Heart Frames, Woven Circle Ring, Floral Bloom Oval and Avezzano Butterflies frame dies from Memory Box)
  3. heat resistant acetate/window plastic

I want to mention the heat resistant acetate/window plastic specifically. Ordinary clear plastic sheets could potentially warp from the heat of the sun filtering through the sun catchers. Heat resistant will be able to withstand the heat and should not warp. I’ve had one of these sun catchers hanging in my window for about a month now and it gets direct sunlight every day from morning until late afternoon. I had used the heat resistant acetate to make that sun catcher and it has not warped at all.

These are so much fun to make and SO easy (plus a great washi tape stash-buster!). You definitely will want to watch the video to see how I made these cuties!

Thanks so much for tuning in today; I will see you again next week for a new Studio Monday tutorial!

cardmaking blog grab bag

  1. I love washi tape but whenever I go to use it on a card, it just never seems to work. So I have all this tape and never know what to do with it!! So excited over your project, I am going to have to try it! Super cool idea!

  2. What a great idea. You could
make one of these for a season, an
occasion, just because – and making
lots of them won’t be expensive.
    thanks for sharing a spectacular
    project. txmlhl(at)yahoo(dot)com

  3. Fun projects. Other than using washi tape to hold my dies in place for die cutting, I rarely ever use Them.

  4. Very cute projects and I like the idea of using the washi tape for the background of the heart. Thanks for sharing.

  5. I, too, have a substantial stash of Washi tape, but I actually use very little of it. Thanks for sharing this idea for making beautiful sun catchers.

  6. What a great idea!! Another project I am trying thanks to you ?. You have fantastic ideas on how to use products in a different way.

  7. What a great project! Can’t wait to try making some. I’ve got plenty of washi tape! Thanks for sharing.

  8. Well now, how clever of you Nina! I love these, especially the one with the new Altenew Washi, just a darling idea!

  9. What a brilliant and inspiring idea! The sun catchers are so beautiful! Love the washi tape selection by the way!!

  10. This is so fun… I do think it would be a wonderful project to make a bunch and donate them to a nursing home. They would bring daily joy to those that sometimes need it! Thanks for sharing. Nicely done.
