Studio Monday with Nina-Marie: No Line Watercolor Featuring Hero Arts

Hello everyone, welcome back to a new Studio Monday video! Since I have been enjoying working with florals lately, I thought it would be a perfect time to feature Hero Art’s Marianne’s Flowers stamp set! This set has some really gorgeous floral illustrations in it, and I paired this with Hero Arts’ new Thank You Messages set.

Studio Monday with Nina-Marie

No line watercolor is a fun technique that can be done with any medium, including markers and colored pencils. I will be using Zig Clean Color markers today as my medium of choice.

When doing no line watercolor, you need to use a very light ink for your stamping so that the coloring does not show the outlines of the stamped image. The ink I like to use for no line coloring is Simon’s Barely Beige ink. This was designed especially for no line coloring. And because Simon’s inks are both alcohol ink friendly and waterproof, the ink can be used with any medium!

In the video, I will be walking you through how I created the variation in color and shading with my Zig markers. The technique is really easy and creates such beautiful, realistic results. I used just a few colors for each card, which I have listed for you here:

Rose: Geranium Red 029, Pink 025, May Green 047, Olive Green 043

Lily: Yellow 050, Bright Yellow 052, Pink Flamingo 222, Pale Green 045, Emerald Green 048, Brown 060

The sutble patterns on the card bases are created with Hero Arts stencils and dye inks. For the lily I used the Rain Dance stencil with Sunshine ink. The rose has a background created with the Crossing Waves stencil and Cosmic Berry ink. Because I used inks that were close in color to the card bases, it created a pretty tone-on-tone effect. I think it adds just the right amount of interest without being too distracting.

I hope you will be checking out the video to see the techniques used in these cards and that it inspires you to try some no line watercoloring of your own! Thanks so much for stopping by and visiting me today… I will see you again very soon with a brand new Studio Monday video!

  1. Thanks, I always enjoy your videos and I just received a set of Zig markers last weeks, so I am excited to use them!!!

  2. these are just beautiful! i love the no-line look but i need a lot of practice with my zig markers! thanks for an awesome video!

  3. It’s ironic that this is the blog post for today…I just made a few no-line floral card panels this weekend. It was the first time trying no-line with my Zig brush markers. I don’t use the Zig markers very often because I haven’t quite gotten the hang of them and my colors always look way too bright. I was pleased with how my florals came out (although not as pretty as Nina’s) and will try this technique again.

  4. Beautiful! I’ve done no-line watercolor but they haven’t been as beautiful as yours (I definitely need to practice!). I really like how you created the halo background.

  5. I love how easy you made this technique look!! The cards are absolutely beautiful. That duster brush is a must on my list, as well as the Zig watercolor markers. TFS

  6. Thanks for the great video showing your ideas with the no line watercoloring! You’ve made really beautiful cards!!

  7. Your cards are so pretty!! Love the bright colors!!!
I’ve never tried no-line watercoloring, but I love the look! I was delighted to know that my SSS inks will work with either kind of marker. Thank you for sharing that tip!

  8. Thanks for this video. I just purchased the Zig markers and this is a great tutorial. I have been using them and I like the results so far.

  9. Love the card and the video is so helpful to someone relatively new to card making. I wondered what type of paper you used to stamp/color the flowers… so many kinds and not sure what to use. Thanks!

  10. I can’t tell you how inspired I am now to try this. I haven’t tried no line water colouring yet but I am inspired to do so now. TFS!

  11. Very beautiful! Such vibrant colours! Fabulous inspiration for colouring with Zig markers – thank you!

  12. Just beautiful and I never tried Zig watercolor markers before – But I will now. Such wonderful inspiration on your blog!! Thank you for sharing.

  13. These are both are so beautiful! I am partial to the gorgeous rose as it’s my favorite color but both are awesome! I need that ink!
