Monochromatic Floral Backgrounds – A Remake 9 Years in the Making! Yippee for Yana

Hi friends! Please join me in welcoming back the oh-so-talented and amazing Yana Smakula! (Please note: our dear friend Yana is Ukrainian. To show support to our brothers and sisters in Ukraine, please see Yana’s post HERE.)

Hello, crafters, this is Yana Smakula for Simon Says Stamp! Welcome back for another Yippee For Yana video!  Today’s video is a little different. I’m sharing a modern twist on one of my favorite stamping techniques: monochromatic floral backgrounds.

If you’ve been a follower of mine for a long time, you might remember a post I shared on my personal blog nine years ago using the “Oh Happy Day” stamp set (in case you don’t, you can check it out here). Well, guess what? Simon Says Stamp just released a remake of that beloved set called Happy Day, and I knew it was time to bring this idea back with some fresh energy, updated inks, and tips that make it even easier!

Select at least three shades of a single color. The Simon Says Stamp Pawsitively Saturated inks come in groups of 3, making it very easy to stamp backgrounds like this. And they are also very easy to clean as they do not stain stamps. I used sets like:

  • Melon, Cantaloupe, Sherbet
  • Carnation, Peony, Rose
  • Cheeky, Blush, Pucker
  • Butter, Zest, Honey

Using a clear block, begin stamping your floral image 3 or 5 times in a triangle arrangement with the lightest ink. This technique helps form a balanced composition.

Next, stamp more flowers in your medium shade, and then again in the darkest shade. Since you’re going from light to dark, you don’t even need to clean your stamp in between!

Tip: Overlap your flowers – no masking needed! This creates visual depth without extra steps.

Use the darkest shade from your trio to stamp the flower centers. This adds just the right amount of contrast and detail.

I trimmed my panels to 3 ¾” x 5” and foam-mounted them onto white card bases for a crisp frame.

I used the “Have a Happy Day” sentiment from the set on all my cards, stamped in VersaFine Onyx Black and die-cut with the coordinating die. I also backed each one with a second die-cut for a bit of dimension.

Some cards got a few stamped leaves (Pearfection ink) and all were embellished using Aura sequins from Spellbinders.

This is a fabulous way to get the most from your floral stamps—and an excellent excuse to revisit older sets in your stash ,too.

Thanks so much for stopping by today! I hope you enjoyed this walk down memory lane with a modern twist. See you next time!

  1. Great remake. I like stamping w/ a block instead of always using a MISTI. This does indeed look like it will move swiftly and I can make a set of cards for a friend in a short time. Thx for the video.
