Mixed Medium with Shari Carroll: Tunnel Book

Mixed Medium with Shari Carroll

Ok, where do I begin…. the beginning is a good place. I am working in the 6×6 square Joggles Tunnel Book. My book contains a visual story of going from the city to the country, where I start out surrounded by buildings and move through to greenery and finally a colorful country home.

I start out my journey from the hustle and bustle of Chicago in my ever so adorable trailer (with wings no less) and head towards the country.

Since I’m starting in the city… I see buildings everywhere! No grass… no greens. My building are made from the Tim Holtz CityScape dies that are watercolored and stamped with the Simon Says Good Reading Background.

I’ve included a spinner element by adding black string to the top and bottom so it will run through the opening. I used the Beautiful Day 6×8 stamp set for my butterfly. I stamped the butterfly twice and since it’s symmetrical, it’s easy to glue to the string back to back. I’ve hidden the string ends behind a flower and the greens.

As I move through the book, I start to see more greens and flowers until I reach my ever so cute home in the country.

This is a really fun project. I took the route of washi tape which was a bit time consuming, but the process was enjoyable and the result is very rewarding. You could also use paints or papers to cover your pages.

I filmed a video where I show clips of the process. You can view it below or on our YouTube channel HERE.

I’ve also created a PDF so you can see all of the photographs taken of this projects. You can view it by following THIS link.

  1. I absolutely adore that trailer stamp and this project looks amazing… Thank you for introducing me to this technique

  2. What creative ways you come up with to incorporate products into your art. Do you have any idea how long this took to make? I teach in the creative learning program at a local community college. This would be a good project for a class! Thanks for sharing and inspiring.

  3. Love this project! I’ve always wanted to make a tunnel book, and this is inspirational. Did you glue down all of the washi tape using the gel medium? It seemed like you did, but I wasn’t sure. Thank you for sharing!

  4. I am always amazed at Shari Carrolls projects, incredibly creative, colorful and so artistic. Thank you for sharing.

  5. WOW! What an amazing project, Shari! Definitely a labor of love. The colors are all so pretty and I love the story behind it! Just beautiful, my friend!

  6. WOW SHARI!!!! This is BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!! I LOVE your choice of washi tape! SO COLORFUL & just GORGEOUS! You are AMAZING to watch on the video!!! I LOVE the little story your Tunnel Book told too! ;) GORGEOUS WORK!!!!! TRULY AMAZING!!!!

  7. Love all the details and bright colors. I love art journals, and 6×6 seems like a manageable size (and perfect for a tunnel book).

  8. Love this book and all of the work that must have gone into it? OMG!!! the people that do these types of mini albums have loads of talents and loads patience in my book, LOL!!! This album just blows me away!!! I love all of the little details that went into it, well done. Thanks for sharing .

  9. Oh my goodness Shari, this is AWESOME, AMAZING, GORGEOUS! Thanks for the video, It would take me a week at least to make one of these, you make it look so easy!

  10. This is a new product for me, having never seen this type of book. Great job on filling in the pages. Thanks for sharing your process with us.

  11. i am drooling! your book is dreamy… i can get lost in all the details. your choice of colors is stunning. wish we could’ve bumped elbows before you moved.

  12. Oh my goodness Shari, this is AWESOME! What an incredible amount of thought, time and work that went into this tunnel book. I have always wanted to make one but need the time to really think it through. As you have shown here this is no small task for the faint of heart. I have some great chipboard sheets that would suffice to make it (especially once it is cut and covered). I think you have inspired me today to prepare my book pages and I can work on it over time. Thanks so much for sharing this beautiful tunnel book, you have done an amazing job on it. How inspiring!

  13. This is really spectacular! Your attention to detail is nothing short of amazing – I’m not sure I would ever have the patience for a project like this. I love, love, love your book and the story it tells!

  14. Wat an awesome project Shari, such happy colours and great layouts on the different pages. Love the book, never seen this before. Thank you for the inspiring video and have a nice weekend.

  15. This is awesome, as so many have mentioned and it truly is! I am at a loss for words because this is such amazing work. Thanks for sharing and I know it was fun for you because it’s so beautiful! :)
