Mixed Medium: Capture Life’s Moments

Mixed Medium with Shari Carroll

Welcome to the blog everyone!! I’ve got a really intricate canvas to share with you that’s full of texture, treatments and muted tones of color.

I could do these all day….everyday… seriously. My focus product is Prima and on this project I show how they work together to create a treasured piece of art.

If you’re new to mix medium, this may appear intimidating. Start with a 6×6 canvas and build up texture with pastes, paper clay, pearls or beads, metal pieces, buttons and flowers. Go at your own pace, take your time and put your items where you want them.

Once you’ve built your layers, you can start adding your color. Spray stains, paints (Watercolor or Acrylic) and mousses work well together to create a shabby chic/vintage look. Crackle pastes are amazing for backgrounds where the paints and sprays fill the crevasses leaving you with an effect much like chipped paint.

Use sprays of water to dilute paints and allow them to flow around the textures. Each area of the canvas has a different look; from the paste with a stencil to the crackle and even the canvas showing thru.

Paper Art Stones fill areas between embellishment and add an interesting effect. They mix well with all the other circular items.

The time involved was about two days as I let some of the layers of pastes air dry naturally. Remember to enjoy the process and don’t rush.

I have filmed the complete process of this canvas. You can view the videos below or on our YouTube channel Part 1 HERE, Part 2 HERE.

Thanks for stopping by today. I hope I’ve inspired you to get out your supplies and make something special.

  1. This is beautiful Shari! I have made one mixed media piece a couple years ago and enjoyed it immensely. This inspires me to get out those supplies and take my time, thanks!

  2. This is special and amazing. I don’t think I could create something that looks this beautiful, but I think it would be fun to try!

  3. Gorgeous project, Shari! As much as I like the outcome, I’m feeling overwhelmed by the number of steps and products involved in creating a piece like this. Being a (primarily CAS) cardmaker, I’m not sure I would go the lengths of acquiring so many different products to give this a go.

  4. this is absolutely stunning Shari!! Thank you for the videos too-very helpful as i have only ever attempted something like this once before:)

  5. Wow, Gorgeous!! The mixed media thing is new to me but after seeing this beautiful piece I may have to check it out. You have definitely inspired me!!

  6. Wow this mixed media is stunning. I love everything about it. You are so talented and creative, I am in awe!!!!

  7. The texture! The dimension! The colors! Love, love, love this, Shari! My favorite part of the video was watching the cracks from the crackle paint fill in with those colors! Very cool! I’m so glad you share your talent! You inspire me!

  8. Shari, I’ve really enjoyed the project and the videos. The number of products that were used made it seem out-of-reach for those of us that don’t already have an extensive supply of mixed-media items. I haven’t done much in the way of 3D art, but you provide such terrific inspiration that I feel as though I’m moving closer to exploring in this area. Thanks very much for the terrific videos!

  9. This is very beautiful Shari. Love the colors and I think you have outdone yourself on this piece. Thanks for inspiring.

  10. What a gorgeous piece! Love the textures and elements you used! It took a while, but it was well worth it!
