Mixed Medium Canvas Shadow Box with Shari Carroll
Merry Christmas!!! Thank you so much for taking your time away from family and friends to join me on the blog.
I have a project that uses some leftover wrapping paper to create a shadow box for winter decoration. I started out with an 8×8 Winsor and Newton canvas which has a deep edge. When you turn it over you have plenty of room to add some colored trees, a greeting, and snowflakes in the background.
The wrapping paper I used is a nice silver with white snowflakes so it’s not too busy and can easily be overlapped without losing the pattern. I applied Matte Gel Medium to the wood of the frame and added torn pieces of papers until I had it covered. I also painted the inside canvas area with white gesso before adding some die cut snowflakes.
The trees were colored with Tim Holtz Distress sprays in Evergreen Bough, Peacock Feathers, and Peeled Paint. I used the Tim Holtz technique of spraying them then dipping each into a cup with water to create an ombre effect. It’s such a brilliant technique!!

Such a pretty color combination, with such nice details.
I had never thought to use the back of a canvas as a shadowbox, but it makes so much sense! It’s got a good depth for it, and you can do all the nifty mixed media stuff on it. Another great idea, Shari!
Beautiful – love that you used gift wrap for this – so nice to reuse it, rather than throw it away since this is not recyclable – at least not where I am. I love the silver, white, and teal-blue tones.
