Doodling with Debby: Make time to play

Hi friends! Happy Monday! Please join me in welcoming back special monthly guest Debby Hughes in our Doodling with Debby blog feature. Read on and be sure to watch the video for more details! Enjoy!

Hello, it’s Debby here. When the new Prize Ribbon Distress color was released from Tim Holtz and I received a parcel of the new products from Simon Says Stamp to use I was obviously delighted! When I get new products, the temptation can be to use them in a format that I’m familiar with. However, I’ve been encouraging myself recently to let loose and simply play with my supplies. Scrap pieces of card, sketchbooks, anything that releases me from creating a finished project.

These explorations are things I don’t share with anyone and I have found that freedom to explore enlightening. I am much happier to try new products, new techniques, new colours and simply have fun creating a big old mess a lot of the time but learning and saving some of those moments for future reference. When the Prize Ribbon colour came out I saw a beautiful Specimen Book created by Paula Cheney which you must check out. The cover of the book drew me in with the beautiful blues and greens and I looked up the colours Paula had used. Now these colours, Prize Ribbon, Mermaid Lagoon and Crushed Olive aren’t in my usual muted palette wheelhouse but with Paula’s inspiration to encourage me I dived in with a play session and turned on the camera to share with you.

STEP BY STEP HOW TO

  • Place a piece of Hot-Pressed Arches Watercolour Card in the Misti and treat with antistatic powder.
  • Stamp the Delicate Outline Flowers set from Simon Says Stamp in Simon Says Stamp clear embossing ink.
  • Sprinkle with Simon Says Stamp White Embossing Powder and heat set.
  • Squidge Prize Ribbon, Mermaid Lagoon and Crushed Olive ink onto a craft mat, spritz with water and dunk the card into the inky puddle.
  • Dry with a heat tool and go back into the inky puddle, adding more ink as required.
  • Mix White Gouache into the inks and dip the card again. Add more inks as required to get areas of light and dark values.
  • Splatter with White Gouache and mix the gouache too with the inks and splatter those mixtures too.
  • Die cut a You Are Enough die from Ivory card and the backer from Vellum.
  • Attach the die to the Vellum with Gina K Connect Glue.
  • Trim the panel to fit an A2 card base cut and scored from Ivory card.
  • Add foam tape to the back of the panel and the sentiment piece and adhere to the card front.
  • Embellish with Eggshell Pearls and Iridescent Sequins.

And so there you go, the result of my play session with the new Prize Ribbon Distress Ink and a color scheme from the fabulous Paula Cheney. I particularly love how the light Crushed Olive plays off the deeper tones of the Prize Ribbon and that the embossed lines capture different combinations next to one another. One of my favorite parts is the flower bud where you have separate Prize Ribbon and Crushed Olive sepals which blend into Mermaid Lagoon petals. I hope you find some time to play with your supplies and see where it takes you.

Well, that’s me for this month. I hope you enjoyed this tutorial; you’ll find the video below. Thanks for joining me and I hope to see you next time for Doodling With Debby.

Thanks so much for stopping by today, and thanks to Debby for being our guest!

  1. Debby this was a brilliant share. Love how you showed when things did not come out exactly like what you were looking for how to keep working colors. You also introduced me to a new product. I was not familiar with “Gouche”.

  2. Love the colors and how this turned out. Play time is calling! Lol!

  3. It seems that “absolutely gorgeous” is already a popular sentiment among the YT comments. Although that is my sentiment as well, I’ll use “Positively magnificent!” This combo of colors is amazing; I really love how these shades complement each other. I also love the sentiment! TFS!

  4. So interesting and finished product is lovely. I was surprised at how much the ink smooshing changed the Prize Ribbon color. I do have to play like this soon! Thank you.

  5. There aren’t enough words to describe the beauty of this art you’ve shared. Stunning! Doesn’t do it justice. Amazing and lovely. Thanks so much for sharing ❤️

  6. Wow! Wow! Wow! The colors grab me personally but I simply love what you did with them. The puddling prints with ink is truly beautiful. I only have cold press paper, so I will learn a bit about the differences in finished product. Time to go play! Thanks for your detailed tutorial.

  7. So pretty! Love the colour combo. I don’t have the new distress ink colour but I think I have another water-reactive ink that come close. Cannot wait to play.
    Thanks for the inspiration, Debby!

  8. Although being an expensive endeavor, no one can resist building a stadium because of the numerous sporting and financial benefits it provides. Athletes are required to perform at their highest level each and every time they take the field because traditional stadiums are fortresses that supporters treat as their own homes. But it’s all about sports. Visit my blog to learn more about sports betting. Since football stadiums are key revenue producers with a variety of revenue streams, they are at the center of the clubs’ vision for the twenty-first century.
