DIY: Upcycling Wrapping Paper

MERRY CHRISTMAS crafty friends!! For those that celebrate, all of us at Simon Says Stamp hope you have a very blessed and happy holiday today!

Each year we come up with ideas for you to upcycle some of your holiday wrapping paper. Today I’m going to take you back in time to “Gum Chains”. Do you remember making those?

I have figured out a simple recipe to make any size gum chain. My chains are used to create some seriously fun crowns for New Year celebrations. I’ve made a folding instruction sheet that you can use as a guide HERE.

I used 30 pieces for the adult size crown, 32 for larger heads. I also made one using 28 pieces with a bow that can be adjusted for kids. These crowns only require wrapping paper, a paper trimmer, scissors, hole punch, ribbon and a splash of love.

  1. Thanks for inspiring me. I will do this with all the grandkids. Everyone can join in. I love it.

Plus…..It will keep my hands busy so no reaching for the snack tray.

  2. Adorable Shari… I will definitely try these with my granddaughters. They are always tickled to learn of the projects I did as a child. I so do remember these gum wrapper chains. Merry Christmas!

  3. Great idea Shari–I’ve got a bag full of used wrapping paper currently sitting in my living room, waiting for me to decide what to do with it!

  4. OMG! I remember making these gum chains wayyyy back in junior high. We had a party where a bunch of us made these for some contest, competing with another school. It was a blast. Love this idea and will try making these next year at Christmas. Thanks much for sharing. Made my day!!!

  5. Fun project! We used this idea to make our “ crown” for our family game playing on Christmas Day. It was a fun touch!
