Art Journaling with Shari Carroll: Using Photographs

Welcome everyone! It’s Shari here with an art journal entry featuring one of my favorite humans… Melody. I was inspired to use this fall photograph from last year to make something I’ll cherish as I go through my journal.

One of the things I didn’t want to do is ruin the photo, it’s the only one I have. So, I created a flip page where the photo is attached to a piece of acetate to protect it. If you’re not inclined to use photographs in your journals, you could create the same flip feature with a favorite piece of art or sentimental keepsake.

I started with a watercolor page of my Dina Wakley Media Journal by collaging some scrap papers from the Capture Adventures pack from 49 and Market (Love this paper)!!. I added some washed of Distress Paint in Hickory Smoke and Vintage Photo with drips. Once it was dry, I used Tim Holtz Butterfly Design Tape to hold the flap in place and  to add some layers.

Die cuts using Tonic Copper cardstock really set off the color tones of the photo and adds a nice sheen to my page.

Under the photo flip feature, I’ve included a journaling card from the Tim Holtz Pocket Cards, perfect for writing out the details of this special memory.

  1. Great way to add lots of detail without
distracting from the main part of
    the page – the picture.
    thanks for sharing

  2. Great way to save that adorable photo. Man she is getting so big…. Love the page and the copper, perfect touch.

  3. What a precious picture Shari! Thanks for the great tip on how to preserve it. The muted colours you used on the page are perfect for showing this little gem off.

  4. I got boxes of old photos from my Mom’s home when she passed and sorted through them. The best ones when to the printer to get matte color copies made on thick photo paper. Then gave my siblings copies and had a couple to use for art journals. It was really hard to see the difference and the print shop used ink that was meant to last 100 years. I love how you made a flip to keep the photo free and to provide journaling spot. It will be appreciate for so many years to come – your art and picture!

  5. This journal page is gorgeous and will definitely be something to treasure. Thanks to Shari’s influence, I have started an art journal, using the disc binding system. That system works best for me since I can create one page (and if I don’t like it,create another) without it being attached. It’s so fun to try and I’m thankful for the inspiration here!

  6. What a stunning page! I love the way you used the copper paper to enhance the colors of the leaves. The picture just pops!

  7. Well Shari, this page put a smile on my face to. It’s so balanced and it all fits together perfectly. Thank you for showing this awesome page and how to incorparate a photo.

  8. Thanks for this journal page layout and the video tutorial, Shari. It’s such a lovely design. Especially like the photo lift to have the journaling underneath. Your journaling page designs never fail to inspire me.

  9. Melody is an absolutely charming child and your page is just wonderful! I love your style and thanks for the great inspiration!

  10. In love with this page. The colors, the photo flip. I have to stop seeing these posts or I will spend all my money on the awesome products you used. I think I ordered everything from your tag post this week.
