Art Journaling: Distress Oxide Reinker Technique with Shari Carroll
Hello everyone and welcome back to the blog!!
As part of my Art Journal feature, I come up with card ideas and techniques that you can also use in your journals. I recently played around with some Distress Oxide reinkers and figured out a cool technique. SUPER COOL INDEED! It almost has a wood grain effect. Now I just need to figure out a name for it. Ha! This is a fantastic technique that you can use as a background or starting point for any size project.
This is really simple and quite effective. I’ve used the Tim Holtz Tonic Glass Media Mat, a drop or two of ink and an acrylic block to move the ink. I dragged the paper through the ink and VIOLA! For journals and larger projects, you can apply the ink using the acrylic block. One of the effects that I really like is the streaks it created. I think the key to this technique is to keep a bit of white space on your surface.
I’ve used colors that created a masculine feel, but any colors can be used for your desired effect. You can also change the direction of your streaks for an abstract look as well. Fun isn’t it?
I used the Reverse Confetti Mod Floral stamps and coordinating dies for my main image. By die cutting them from my colored paper and lifting them up, I didn’t lose my background.
I’ve captured this technique in a video which you can view below or on our YouTube channel HERE.

Pretty cool technique!! I would love to try it!
I am in agreement with you Shari, this technique is BEAUTIFUL!!!!SO EASY TOO! LOVE the colors you chose & the masculine feel of this card! THANK YOU for showing us how you did this, Shari! I am also interested in Tim’s Mat! I will have to take a closer look & see if I can find out more about it! I’ve been thinking about a new mat…. GORGEOUS WORK, SHARI!!!! ;) (If you’re able to answer questions, is that a TABLET on the side? It looks like one in the pictures on SSS, but doesn’t as you work with it! LOL) ;) THANKS!!!!
HI Becky! The glass matt has the black grid surface and the white area is a craft matt. I love this, the craft mat sheets are replaceable. I have mine turned around since I’m left handed.
Hope this helps!
Shari
Great technique Shari! I too, am left handed and emailed Tonic that since most artists are left handed (creating with the right side of their brains) they should also make the mat for “Lefties” with the measurements to the left. They said they would forward my email to their designers. God only kniws if or when that will hapoen. ?
THANK YOU SHARI!!! Yes, your explanation helps GREATLY! I will check out the replacements too now! ;) THANK YOU SHARI!
Oh my goodness! this is an AWESOME technique! Thanks for the video!

That’s wonderful, my mother in law would absolutely love that design and the colours!
Fabulous color combo and I love your use of the die cut.
Such a amazing card. Thanks for sharing this great technique…
This is gorgeous. I don’t have distress oxides, but have tons of distress and re-inkers and will try it with them. It probably won’t be quite the same, but I bet it will still look great. Thanks for your great ideas.
WOW! Simply Stunning!
Really nice card
I love the woodgrain/weathered wood look so this is awesome! As soon as I looked at it I saw ocean/water colors for the background and shell cutouts, thanks for the inspiration! :)
I love the color combination with your streaking technique – there’s your name for it :) Very cool, indeed! Thanks for sharing.
Lovely! Amazing colors!!
Similar feeling as the ‘farmhouse’ look that is so popular now. Reminds me of a row of beach houses or even a boardwalk or old furniture that has received many layers of paint over the years. Really cool!
Just love the look you achieved with this technique, Shari! Fabulous masculine card.
I really like the background this technique created! Thanks foe sharing it!
Fabulous card! Love the color combo.
Thanks for the inspiration.
Nice idea
This looks so cool! I am always inspired by you, Shari, and even made two canvases last month. :-)
Wonderful techniques. I love the tip for embossing on cut images — I really will use that one. The Distress Oxide background is beautiful. I’ve never bought re-inkers before, but I may have to get a few and give this a try!
Very dramatic.
What a fun background technique, Shari. Love that wood grain look with very little effort. Thanks for sharing this fun idea!
so cool! Thank you for sharing!
Stunningly beautiful card! What a fun and inspiring technique!! Thanks for sharing such a fun idea!
Love the wood look of this oxide technique.
What a great card and video. Thanks for sharing both, especially the video that shows how well the clear embossing on the mod florals looks. The “wood grain” effect from dragging the inkers adds another great dimension. So many dimensions to this card!
An inspiring technique to try! Love the card!
Hi Shari, Another Amazing post, I love this technique, I agree that it would look great in my journals or for a “man” card. I will be trying this, thanks for a great post, let us know when you come up with a catchy name for the technique, LOL.
Fabulous technique! Love the effect.
Jaw Dropping……love this and can’t wait to try it!!

Gorgeous card, Shari! Love the technique you shared (I wonder if that can be replicated with watercolor)! The design is simple yet has small details like the embossing on the leaves and beautiful double bow! Well done <3
