Art Journal Style Cards with Shari Carroll

Welcome everyone!! I had this crazy thought of bringing Art Journaling to cardmaking by creating simple small pieces of art that I can give away. I also thought this would be a great way to show how you can try Art journaling on a smaller scale.

I pulled out my Tim Holtz layering stencils and some bright Tim Holtz Mini Distress inks and went to town creating my background.

I started by using coordinating colors like Mowed Lawn and Peacock Feathers in a small area of the stencil. I spritzed the ink with water and pressed the stencil onto a panel of Distress watercolor cardstock. I added several layers using different stencils and colors along the way.

As I worked on the vibrant piece and before cleaning the stencil off with each color, I pressed the stencil onto a second piece of watercolor cardstock with the remaining ink. This gave me a really interesting background and didn’t take much time at all!

I used a bit Dina Wakely and Dylusions washi tape over the stamped Tim Holtz Wildflowers, then finished off my cards by adding Tim Holtz Tiny Text Remnant Rub messages in both black and white. This is a super easy technique to try and every piece will be unique!!

  1. Shari,
I just love your ideas and your fantastic choice of colors.
Thank you so much for sharing your creations!

  2. This is such a great idea and a good way to use those fun stencils. I am so going to try this out, I can see some serious play time in my immediate future. Beautiful cards Shari.

  3. What a great idea. I like the artsy look, and the rich colors. I need to get out my stencils…

  4. These look so fun! They make great cards. That’s what I love about paper crafting… the sky is the limit when it comes to ideas.

  5. I love the idea of bringing Art Journaling into the card-making community. These two cards are delightful and fresh; using leftover ink on a second canvas made an interesting background. Thank you for inspiring me to try something different.

  6. What a great idea!! I love Tim Holtz’s stencils. They create such beautiful backgrounds. This card is simply gorgeous. Great job!!

  7. Very pretty! I like the look of all the layering stencils. I didn’t really understand how to use them. Thanx!

  8. Shari, I love your beautiful, inspiring art journaling videos. I love making cards, but I make more than I can use, so I’m planning to start an art journal. I’ve bought the journal, so now all I have to do is get started! Wish me luck…

  9. Love these cards! I have not used this background technique in a long time. Thank you for reminding me what fun it is and what a beautiful, colorful background it creates. You’ve inspired me to try this again. Thank you.

  10. Boy, I kept thinking this has to be the layer and you kept going and going. I thought it was going to get overdone but in the end, it never did. I’m going to have to try this out.

    Thanks!

  11. Beautiful work on the small scale. Your images are stunning both in colour and images, really like the love life one as I’m so I’ll at the moment the Drs think I’m about to end up paralysed waist down and I’m remembering to love the life I have x

  12. Wonderfully creative and cathartive art process that produced 2 beautiful cards. Love the silhouetted flowers and washi tape additions. Thanks, Shari!

  13. What beautiful cards!! I love how you did them and enjoyed watching your process as always! When you were putting ink on the stencils, did you think about putting cardstock down instead of a paper towel? You could have made so many more cards!! I love how you used stencil, ink, spray, add to paper, I could handle that and the fun thing is is that I don’t think any two would ever be the same which is awesome! Love this technique, Thank Shari for sharing!!!!

  14. Great video showing your process. And you avoided making a muddy brown in spite of using complementary colors. I’ve “tested out” card ideas in my art journal, but not with stencils. Will give this a try.

  15. When Shari creates an art journal look, it’s always beautiful. Look at those cards! When I try, it’s usually a mess, but this looks like so much fun, I’m going to give it a try. Thanks, Shari for the inspiration! What would we do without your creative ideas!

  16. I love the beautiful artistic look of your cards. They are Awesome and I am going to try to make something similar. Very impressive.

  17. What an awesome technique! Both cards are beautiful, I was even thinking your paper towel looked pretty amazing! I have never seen the Rub-on’s so I’m off to investigate :)
