Art Journal: Distressed Paint Technique

Welcome everyone!!! I’m working in my Dylusions Small Flip Journal today and playing around with a distressed layered paint technique using petroleum jelly. There’s nothing better to me than old furniture with layers and layers of paint that are gems of time gone by!

I started with some torn pages from a book and glued them in place on my page. Next step is to cover the entire page with Gel Medium to “even the field” so all papers have the same texture and finish.

I added some petroleum jelly with my finger on areas that I wanted to preserve and then covered the page with one paint color at a time using a brayer. Once the paint layer was dry, I wiped the page clean with a baby wipe and paper towel then continued on with another coat of petroleum jelly and paint. The petroleum jelly acts as a resist to the paint.

This technique allows you to use a variety of colors without them getting muddy because each color is used separately.
