Art Journal: Believe

Welcome February!!! We are getting one step closer to Spring!!!

I’m back with another Art Journal page. Last month I showed you some light collage by layering papers and a few elements on my page. This month I’d like to introduce you to adding some paints and texture to your collage.

I started out with torn pages from some old books and glued them down using a glue stick. I added a little bit of white gesso over top to diffuse the papers and to create a cloudy effect.

Next, I used Texture Paste with a couple stencils to add texture to the papers. The next step is something I think is important, I used Clear Gesso over everything to “even the field”. The clear gesso allows the print of the papers to show through while coating everything so it has the same surface. This allows the paints to behave the same over the entire piece. If I didn’t use it, the papers might absorb the paints a little too much and peel without a protective coating.

The paint I used is Dylusions Chopped Pesto and Polished Jade which I’ve applied using a baby wipe. Dyan Reaveley taught me this, it’s one of the easiest ways to add paint to create a background. Once you’re done with your backgrounds allow it to dry. I’ve used the Tim Holtz Feather Duo and Simon Says Stamp Believe die to decorate my page.

I filmed a full process video which you can view below or on our YouTube Channel HERE. I hope you enjoy!

  1. What a gorgeous page Shari! Love those colours. Who couldn’t love a colour called Chopped Pesto! Gorgeous textures.

  2. Awesome art journal page. Love all the details. The colors and the feathers are awesome!
    Thanks for sharing with us!

  3. I like your “clean” set up for working and LOVE the idea to take only a portion of the cover from the lid of the paint. That way it reduces the amount of area that can stick when dry making it hard to open AND it provides a place to wipe excess paint from the brush. GREAT ideas for so many different applications!

  4. SO BEAUTIFUL, SHARI! It was VERY CALMING to watch you work, with the BEAUTIFUL HUES of green…. You were SO NEAT with everything, when mixed media seems to be a messy thing! LOL JUST BEAUTIFUL!!!! ;)

  5. This is beautiful and I just learn so much from watching your techniques as you create. My little journal book is waiting and as soon as I finish my valentine cards, I’m going to open it and start. I’m so glad you doing this collage type of journal, for I feel more comfortable trying it! Thanks!

  6. I’m a card maker but for our new house I want to create an art piece for the wall in our living room. This video is very informative. A link to the first video would be helpful though. Very inspiring designers, I’m glad to have found this blog!

  7. I’ve been wanting to try a technique like this. You’ve made me feel like I could do this. You’ve explained it beautifully. Thanks!
