Monochromatic Floral Backgrounds – A Remake 9 Years in the Making! Yippee for Yana

Hi friends! Please join me in welcoming back the oh-so-talented and amazing Yana Smakula! (Please note: our dear friend Yana is Ukrainian. To show support to our brothers and sisters in Ukraine, please see Yana’s post HERE.)

Hello, crafters, this is Yana Smakula for Simon Says Stamp! Welcome back for another Yippee For Yana video! Today’s video is a little different. I’m sharing a modern twist on one of my favorite stamping techniques: monochromatic floral backgrounds.

If you’ve been a follower of mine for a long time, you might remember a post I shared on my personal blog nine years ago using the “Oh Happy Day” stamp set (in case you don’t, you can check it out here). Well, guess what? Simon Says Stamp just released a remake of that beloved set called Happy Day, and I knew it was time to bring this idea back with some fresh energy, updated inks, and tips that make it even easier!

Select at least three shades of a single color. The Simon Says Stamp Pawsitively Saturated inks come in groups of 3, making it very easy to stamp backgrounds like this. And they are also very easy to clean as they do not stain stamps. I used sets like:
- Melon, Cantaloupe, Sherbet
- Carnation, Peony, Rose
- Cheeky, Blush, Pucker
- Butter, Zest, Honey

Using a clear block, begin stamping your floral image 3 or 5 times in a triangle arrangement with the lightest ink. This technique helps form a balanced composition.

Next, stamp more flowers in your medium shade, and then again in the darkest shade. Since you’re going from light to dark, you don’t even need to clean your stamp in between!

Tip: Overlap your flowers – no masking needed! This creates visual depth without extra steps.

Use the darkest shade from your trio to stamp the flower centers. This adds just the right amount of contrast and detail.
I trimmed my panels to 3 ¾” x 5” and foam-mounted them onto white card bases for a crisp frame.

I used the “Have a Happy Day” sentiment from the set on all my cards, stamped in VersaFine Onyx Black and die-cut with the coordinating die. I also backed each one with a second die-cut for a bit of dimension.
Some cards got a few stamped leaves (Pearfection ink) and all were embellished using Aura sequins from Spellbinders.

This is a fabulous way to get the most from your floral stamps—and an excellent excuse to revisit older sets in your stash ,too.
Thanks so much for stopping by today! I hope you enjoyed this walk down memory lane with a modern twist. See you next time!

Getting Inky with Distress Crayons for a Cool Background! [reprise!] Not a Card with Nina-Marie

Hello friends, it’s Nina-Marie Trapani here with you for another installment of my Not a Card feature! Today I am sharing an art piece that I created for my craft space. I love making art that I can display and inspire my future creative endeavors.

This tag piece uses many Tim Holtz products, including the Brushstroke Butterflies and Brushstroke Flowers 2 die sets, along with Distress Crayons and Oxides!

The Distress Crayons make up a bulk of this project—I used them to build the background! The tag was covered with some Collage Medium and Collage Paper before using the crayons to add color and stenciling.

You’ll definitely want to check out the video to see this project come together! It was a lot of fun and I hope it inspires you to create something pretty for YOUR crafty space or home decor!
