Add a Touch of Nature to Your Shaker Card with the Morning Garden Floral Frame: Crafty With Caly

Hi everyone! It’s Caly Person here today!

Today’s shaker card features several products from the Cheering for You release. Framed dies are perfect for full shaker cards and the Morning Garden Floral Frame is no exception!

I masked off the frame in order to ink-blend the foliage. There is a die that cuts out the flowers separately to overlay so you can ink-blend the foliage without worrying about the colors bleeding onto the flower heads. Check out the video to see how this shaker card comes together!

WATCH THE VIDEO:

After ink-blending the Morning Garden Floral Frame flowers, I adhered them over the ink-blended frame panel. Next, I adhered Lightweight Acetate on the backside to turn it into a shaker window. Then, to make walls for the shaker window, I die-cut 5 more frames and snipped out the foliage and flowers so I was left only with the frame. I glued them together for height and adhered them to the ink-blended shaker window. You can alternatively use foam adhesive strips instead of die-cutting and glueing together frames.

For the background, I stamped Old Letter using Latte ink. Then, I ink-blended the background with residual ink from my blending brushes. I then spritzed it with Distress Spritz in Fossilized Amber, Picked Raspberry, and Wilted Violet.

I added Summer Sunset and Garden Blooms Embellishments on top of the background panel and adhered the Morning Garden Floral Frame shaker window over the background panel to secure the shaker embellishments in place. To finish, I embossed a sentiment from the Graceful Flowers set.

I hope you enjoyed this card and video! Thanks so much for stopping by!

~Caly

My Whole Heart Mixed Media Tutorial by Paula Cheney

Hi friends! Happy Wednesday! I’m delighted to welcome back special guest Paula Cheney to our blog today with a gorgeous new mixed media project tutorial to inspire! Read on for all the details and enjoy!

  • Paint a small Vignette Tray with Speckled Egg Distress Paint. We are going to cover the inside of the tray, so I painted about a 1/2” into the back area to disguise any short paper cuts.
  • Once the paint is dry, add Design Tape to the edge of the Vignette Tray. I like to add Collage Medium to the lip edge, then place the tape over the top. The Collage Medium will keep it secure.
  • Choose about 15 Paper Strips to line the back of the tray. The Paper Strips come in 3 widths so the actual quantity needed will depend on the widths you choose. Cut the strips 4 3/8” long.
  • Use Collage Medium to adhere the Paper Strips to the tray. I started at the bottom and worked my way up to the top. I also added Collage Medium over the top of each strip as I went along. It is so fun to watch the patterns come together to create an entire background.
  • Once dry, use a damp brush to add Walnut Stain Distress Crayon over the surface. Pounce with a wet wipe to disguise the brush marks. Set aside to dry.
  • Punch out the center of the rounded top Facade (it will not be used). Glue two 4” Etcetera Trim pieces together as shown. One piece is 3/4” wide and the other is 1/2” wide so they easily stack together to create the perfect stair-step. Paint all the pieces with Picket Fence Distress Paint, then set aside to dry.
  • Choose a piece of Collage Paper from the Serendipity pack. Because we only need a small amount, cut the Collage Paper in half and set one half aside. Using a Detailer Water Brush, draw a line of water around the image that will go at the top of the Facade. Pull the paper along the water line to separate. Save all scraps for the lower portion of the Facade.
  • Use Collage Medium to add the Collage Paper pieces. You will need Collage Medium both under and over the thin paper. Smooth with a soft brush and let dry.
  • Use a Sanding Disk on a Mini Blending Tool to sand away the excess Collage Paper.
  • Scribble Walnut Stain Distress Crayon on mat, pick up with a damp brush and add crayon over the surface to age. Pounce with a wet wipe if it gets too dark. Let dry.
  • Scribble multiple colors of Distress Crayons on mat. Pick up each color with a Detailer Water Brush. I don’t actually use the water from the brush for this step, but I like the stiff bristles of the Water Brush, so I compromise by using the brush tip, but picking up only tiny amounts of water that I have on my mat. It is much easier to control the amount of water this way, rather than using the self-feeding feature of a Water Brush.
  • Continue coloring the lower portion of the Facade as well as the scalloped trim piece. It is much easier doing these at the same time so they look cohesive.
  • Use a Gold Mixative (remember to shake until you hear the mixing ball) and a Mini Blending Tool with a felt pad to color the small bird from the Sweetheart Adornments pack. Color the Typed Tag with Picket Fence Distress Crayon: Scribble the crayon over the tag, then use your thumbs to rub the soft crayon into the recessed letters.
  • Cut a piece of string about 10”. Thread the bird on the string and tie a knot. Thread one end of the string into the hole in Typed Tag and tie a bow. Trim off the leftover string.
  • Use a foam square to add the Typed Tag to the top of the Facade. I added Collage Medium to the back of the bird so it says in place. I also added a touch of Collage Medium to the knot so it will stay secure over time (it dries clear).
  • Use Collage Medium to add the scallop Trim to the tray. There is 1” between the bottom of the scallop and the bottom of the tray. Make two, triple stacks of foam squares. Turn the Facade over and add one to each of the top corners of the Baseboard Window. Peel the protective paper off each foam stack, then add Collage medium along the bottom edge. Place Facade into tray so the bottom sits about an 1/8” over the scallop trim. Set aside to dry before standing up.
  • Use Distress Paint (Rustic Wilderness, Tattered Rose and Mustard Seed) to paint metal flower from the Sweetheart Adornment pack. Once dry, lightly sand with steel wool.
  • Use Distress Paint Speckled Egg to paint a small Salvaged Heart. Once dry, brush with Walnut Stain Distress Crayon.
  • Choose an image from Photobooth. Cut out photo to fit behind one window frame. Choose one Mini Stencil Chip (letter or number) to fit into another window frame. You could also substitute with a family photo and the first letter of the persons name (or age if they are 9 and under). If the image is a couple, you might use the number 2.
  • Use foam squares to add all 4 pieces (flower, Photobooth, Mini Stencil Chip and Salvaged Heart to the windows.
