Ranger Alcohol Inks

Hi everyone! Welcome back to the blog. It’s Shari here to show you an older technique that I’ve just discovered.

I was is AWE of Tim Holtz’s brilliant use of canned air to get splatters with alcohol inks. Did I say Brilliant??? It’s amazing, fun and honestly a bit addictive. I couldn’t wait to give it a try.

I used six colors of alcohol inks and also Pearl Mixative. All this was done on Ranger’s Glossy card stock.  After adding color to my paper, I used a couple rub-on sheets to complete the look.

To finish things off, I added my greeting with the Chiseled Industrious letter stickers and some stained Crinkle Ribbon. Be sure to check out the links below for all the colors I used.

I put together a video of the process, hope you enjoy!

Thanks for stopping by today!

  1. Great card! I have not played with alcohol inks in ages but I think this might change later on today – thanks for the inspiration!

  2. I had forgotten all about this technique, Shari. Thanks so much for bringing it back to mind. I love the look of alcohol inks on glossy card stock. This was one of my favorite techniques when I first started stamping. I used the Tim Holtz acrylic pieces and stamped on them with archival ink and then glued them on to alcohol backgrounds sometimes infused with the metallics. I’ll have to try the rub ons and the compressed air. i’ve got to get some of the stuff out again. You are a great inspiration!

  3. I am just blown away by your card and the technique you shared with us today by using canned air with alchohol inks.

  4. I appreciate this reminder of a brilliant technique and I know I’ll be dusting off my alcohol inks with some canned air thanks to your inspiration. Your card looks fabulous and your instructions were spot-on. I especially liked the tip on using a bowl to tint the ribbons–so much better than chasing mine around all over the place!!

  5. OMG! A girl after my own heart….GRUNGE….I love anything done in grunge and we all know that Tim is the master of it. My jaw dropped when I watched you spray with the can air. What a technique. My local scrapbook store (now closed) very briefly touched on alcohol inks years ago but I don’t remember the project turning out like this. ( it was using tin foil) I am going to reacquaint myself with the purchase of alcohol inks so I can do more grunge cards. Anything grunge or rust…I’m there!!!!

    1. Addendum: went out tonight and purchased some alcohol inks and the glossy paper. I already had can air on hand (I use it to clean lampshades and silk flowers ). Need to order Tim’s rub-ons and then I’ll be all set.

  6. Somehow this is a technique I had missed until now! Thanks so much for sharing! You did a fantastic job and I just might have to try this myself.

  7. I use this technique often but never thought to just make a strip of colour. Love the total look you achieved with the stickers and embellishments!

  8. Love it! Great reminder of an awesome technique. I really love the highlight of color you created. Wonderful video, love how you got your fingers inky when staining the ribbon:)
Thanks for making all this to share!~kim

  9. What a FABULOUS CARD Shari! I LOVED watching you create this! AND your little tips help too! I’ve never used those rub-on’s in all the years I’ve been stamping. I should give them a try! :) AND I like how you did the ribbon in the dish too. Along with this fabulous technique! I DEFINATELY want to TRY IT!!! :D THANK YOU!!! :D

  10. Shari, I love this card! I’m just getting into mixed media and love all Tim Holtz products.
Thanks so much for showing how you put this together. Alcohol inks are next on my list!!

  11. So beautiful and creative. Thanks for sharing this technique. Love it. Thank you Shari for the great card and video. Love you’re ideas.
