I love dies; they are so versatile and can be used for many different things. Here we are going to use dies to make an interactive card, but also to make our own stencils and masks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/--me7iQFPIhk\/Uf-MJqNGOvI\/AAAAAAAAK1s\/yic1XlkDECQ\/s1600\/butterfly+die+cut+tutorial+b.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 0 currentColor;\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/--me7iQFPIhk\/Uf-MJqNGOvI\/AAAAAAAAK1s\/yic1XlkDECQ\/s1600\/butterfly+die+cut+tutorial+b.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"420\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This is the inside of the card, die cut with the <a href=\"http:\/\/karenburniston.typepad.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Karen Burniston&#8217;s <\/a>Sizzix <a href=\"http:\/\/www.simonsaysstamp.com\/servlet\/the-57976\/658369-BUTTERFLY-BUTTERFLIES-WINDOW\/Detail\" target=\"_blank\">3-D Butterfly Window Pop &#8216;n Cuts insert die<\/a>. For a different twist I used a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.simonsaysstamp.com\/servlet\/the-46969\/ISM35237-%2312-MANILA-CRAFT\/Detail\" target=\"_blank\">giant Ranger tag <\/a>as my card base. The background is inked, stamped and misted. Let&#8217;s start!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-YDEuF1GZhi4\/Uf-LrVXDliI\/AAAAAAAAKz0\/oN3dphODa20\/s1600\/butterfly+die+cut+tutorial+1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 0 currentColor;\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-YDEuF1GZhi4\/Uf-LrVXDliI\/AAAAAAAAKz0\/oN3dphODa20\/s1600\/butterfly+die+cut+tutorial+1.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"420\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Normally I would use a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.simonsaysstamp.com\/servlet\/the-49234\/657802-HORIZONTAL-A2-CIRCLE\/Detail\" target=\"_blank\">pop &#8216;n cuts&#8217; base die <\/a>to place my insert die in, but in this case, the tag is a bit wider than the base die, so it would have been die cut too. Instead, I used a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.simonsaysstamp.com\/servlet\/the-29444\/Sizzix-BASE-TRAY-L\/Detail\" target=\"_blank\">Tim Holtz base tray<\/a>. To make sure the paper didn&#8217;t move during cutting, I attached it to the insert die with masking tape. All the pop &#8216;n cuts dies have a little mark where the centre will be, so it is easy to line up the paper.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-kxfbqYpPqow\/Uf-L30fLiAI\/AAAAAAAAK0k\/JFma3P3PS6A\/s1600\/butterfly+die+cut+tutorial+2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 0 currentColor;\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-kxfbqYpPqow\/Uf-L30fLiAI\/AAAAAAAAK0k\/JFma3P3PS6A\/s1600\/butterfly+die+cut+tutorial+2.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"420\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I die cut the Butterfly Window once more from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.simonsaysstamp.com\/servlet\/the-36772\/judikins-judi-kinsEclipse-ART\/Detail\" target=\"_blank\">Eclipse tape<\/a>, to use as mask. Eclipse tape works great for this since it is low-tack and made specifically for masking. Cut the butterflies away with scissors, carefully, because we are going to use both the frame and the butterflies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-YQdOKLhmuLw\/Uf-L6N2LXaI\/AAAAAAAAK0w\/yaUgd2CI2KY\/s1600\/butterfly+die+cut+tutorial+3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 0 currentColor;\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-YQdOKLhmuLw\/Uf-L6N2LXaI\/AAAAAAAAK0w\/yaUgd2CI2KY\/s1600\/butterfly+die+cut+tutorial+3.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"420\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Apply the frame around the large butterfly, the small one is easy to ink without a mask, but the large one would have been trickier. Ink with Squeezed Lemonade using and ink-blending tool.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-6QTJpj0JXlI\/Uf-L9Jlu63I\/AAAAAAAAK08\/XLpefTgouuI\/s1600\/butterfly+die+cut+tutorial+4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 0 currentColor;\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-6QTJpj0JXlI\/Uf-L9Jlu63I\/AAAAAAAAK08\/XLpefTgouuI\/s1600\/butterfly+die+cut+tutorial+4.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"420\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Leave the mask in place. Die cut the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.simonsaysstamp.com\/servlet\/the-47080\/Tim-Holtz-Sizzix-Die\/Detail\" target=\"_blank\">Cobblestones<\/a> from Eclipse tape and place it over the butterflies. It is very easy to make your own stencils with dies and it is a great way of getting more out of your dies. Ink the card with Peacock Feathers, Squeezed Lemonade and Wild Honey.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-m1eiKoE06d4\/Uf-MADgcKnI\/AAAAAAAAK1M\/z-oTWYeqUAM\/s1600\/butterfly+die+cut+tutorial+7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 0 currentColor;\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-m1eiKoE06d4\/Uf-MADgcKnI\/AAAAAAAAK1M\/z-oTWYeqUAM\/s1600\/butterfly+die+cut+tutorial+7.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"420\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I wanted a chalkier look and misted with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.simonsaysstamp.com\/servlet\/the-52387\/DYC37873-WHITE-LINEN-2013\/Detail\" target=\"_blank\">White Linen Dylusions ink spray<\/a>, still leaving the butterfly masks on. Loved the result. This step also makes the butterflies stand out more against the background. Leave to dry.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-O97rc-I43J4\/Uf-MEF_6hhI\/AAAAAAAAK1c\/6DOwqoT8n8Q\/s1600\/butterfly+die+cut+tutorial+8.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 0 currentColor;\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-O97rc-I43J4\/Uf-MEF_6hhI\/AAAAAAAAK1c\/6DOwqoT8n8Q\/s1600\/butterfly+die+cut+tutorial+8.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"420\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I left the masks on while I stamped the background (but had taken them off when I took this photo). I used Darkroom Door stamps. First, the great sentiment from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.simonsaysstamp.com\/servlet\/the-48746\/Darkroom-Door-Cling-Stamp\/Detail\" target=\"_blank\">New York Vol. 2<\/a> was stamped with Archival Jet Black ink, with the help of a<a href=\"http:\/\/www.simonsaysstamp.com\/servlet\/the-21708\/EK-Success-STAMP-dsh-A-dsh-MA-dsh-JIG-Stamp\/Detail\" target=\"_blank\"> stamp positioner <\/a>for exact placement. The gorgeous <a href=\"http:\/\/www.simonsaysstamp.com\/servlet\/the-55414\/Darkroom-Door-Cling-Stamp\/Detail\" target=\"_blank\">carved flowers <\/a>were stamped with Peacock Feathers and so was the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.simonsaysstamp.com\/servlet\/the-48782\/Darkroom-Door-Cling-Stamp\/Detail\" target=\"_blank\">Stone Background<\/a>, to mimic the pattern on the butterflies. I stamped the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.simonsaysstamp.com\/servlet\/the-58069\/Darkroom-Door-Cling-Stamp\/Detail\" target=\"_blank\">Gazette background <\/a>with Wild Honey, holding the cling stamp in my hand for a random impression. Finally, two sentiments from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.simonsaysstamp.com\/servlet\/the-51970\/Darkroom-Door-Cling-Stamp\/Detail\" target=\"_blank\">Wildflowers Vol. 1<\/a> were stamped with Jet Black. The edges were inked with Black Soot.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-n5QoUxDzXuQ\/Uf-Lo1JmnRI\/AAAAAAAAKzs\/764ccgKkiZw\/s1600\/butterfly+die+cut+tutorial+10.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 0 currentColor;\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-n5QoUxDzXuQ\/Uf-Lo1JmnRI\/AAAAAAAAKzs\/764ccgKkiZw\/s1600\/butterfly+die+cut+tutorial+10.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"420\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The front of the card was inked, misted and stamped in the same way as the inside.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-wkERDN69Glc\/Uf-LujKmZNI\/AAAAAAAAK0E\/eN7C6hbd9Fk\/s1600\/butterfly+die+cut+tutorial+11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 0 currentColor;\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-wkERDN69Glc\/Uf-LujKmZNI\/AAAAAAAAK0E\/eN7C6hbd9Fk\/s1600\/butterfly+die+cut+tutorial+11.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"420\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Butterfly Window cuts away a rectangle around the butterflies, and this can be left as is, but I wanted a spine on this card, and cut one from Core&#8217;dinations cardstock. It was embossed in the Bubble folder, sanded and inked with Black Soot.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-HjgYEMZnMeY\/Uf-MDgR70BI\/AAAAAAAAK1U\/nK99sWMfyPM\/s1600\/butterfly+die+cut+tutorial+9.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 0 currentColor;\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-HjgYEMZnMeY\/Uf-MDgR70BI\/AAAAAAAAK1U\/nK99sWMfyPM\/s1600\/butterfly+die+cut+tutorial+9.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"420\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Bigz dies can cut through many different materials, and here I decided to use another favourite of mine, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.simonsaysstamp.com\/servlet\/the-28602\/Wendy-Vecchi-CLEARLY-FOR\/Detail\" target=\"_blank\">Wendy Vecchi&#8217;s Clearly for Art Modeling film<\/a>. Die cut both butterflies with the Butterfly Window, as well as three smaller <a href=\"http:\/\/www.simonsaysstamp.com\/servlet\/the-57959\/658367-BUTTERFLIES-BUTTERFLY-oval\/Detail\" target=\"_blank\">butterflies<\/a>. Stamp them with the Gazette background stamp using <a href=\"http:\/\/www.simonsaysstamp.com\/servlet\/the-6917\/SJ250-opaque-chalk-white\/Detail\" target=\"_blank\">Stazon Cotton White <\/a>ink. When the ink is dry, place one butterfly at a time on a craft sheet, and heat with a heat gun. Shape the wings to give dimension to the butterflies, be careful so you don&#8217;t burn yourself. The film keeps it shape perfectly. You need to trim the large butterfly a little bit with scissors, so that it doesn&#8217;t get stuck in the mechanism of the card. Paint a little bit of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.simonsaysstamp.com\/servlet\/the-52356\/TDD36425-PICKET-FENCE-WHITE\/Detail\" target=\"_blank\">Picket Fence Distress Paint <\/a>around the edges.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-MvtTX8n0amw\/Uf-MLe6LsEI\/AAAAAAAAK18\/sI3yMQ3S5VU\/s1600\/butterfly+die+cut+tutorial+sneak+peek.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 0 currentColor;\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-MvtTX8n0amw\/Uf-MLe6LsEI\/AAAAAAAAK18\/sI3yMQ3S5VU\/s1600\/butterfly+die+cut+tutorial+sneak+peek.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"420\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Attach the butterflies with a tiny attacher.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-0LLGo_7p17w\/Uf-LxkvuZ6I\/AAAAAAAAK0M\/zQC0g1BpC10\/s1600\/butterfly+die+cut+tutorial+13.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 0 currentColor;\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-0LLGo_7p17w\/Uf-LxkvuZ6I\/AAAAAAAAK0M\/zQC0g1BpC10\/s1600\/butterfly+die+cut+tutorial+13.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"420\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Die cuts can also be used for sentiments, and here I used the sweet <a href=\"http:\/\/www.simonsaysstamp.com\/servlet\/the-46540\/657789-LOVE-SET-TAG\/Detail\" target=\"_blank\">Love set<\/a>.
