It is Stamptember and I (Anna-Karin) am happy to be here today with a stamping tutorial. I am going to show you three different ways in which to stamp on black cardstock and to create shine and glimmer.

I don’t use black cardstock often for stamping, only for things like matting and cardbases, so when I got Ranger’s new smooth black cardstock, I thought I would challenge myself to stamp on it, in three different ways. Heat embossing works great on black cardstock, but instead of using ordinary embossing powder, I used Ranger’s Sticky Embossing Powder, which works as an adhesive, making it possible to use your stamps together with products that can otherwise be hard to use on stamped images. I used all the three stamped papers on the same card, to show you their differences and how they look together. It will work great to use only one of these on a project too. We’ll be using Perfect Pearls powder, gold leaf and Distress Glitter.

Starting with the background, I inked up Tim Holtz Marble stamp with embossing ink. Stamp it and immediately cover with Sticky Embossing Powder. Pour the leftover powder back into the jar. Heat the powder with a heat gun, you will notice that it turns transparent. I took this photo before melting the powder.

Have three or more jars of Perfect Pearls powder ready and immediately pounce the powder on the background using a Perfect Pearls paint brush.

Brush off the leftover powder. If you want to you can mix it with some water and use it to paint a stamped image for another project. Mist lightly with water to set the Perfect Pearls.

It is hard to capture the shine of Perfect Pearls on a photo. You might be able to see it a little better here. You can use Perfect Pearls in the same way together with only embossing ink, but I liked the extra texture from the Sticky Embossing Powder. Some powder will stick to the black cardstock too, but I thought that gave a nice look to the background.

Secondly, I decided to try the same technique but with gold leaf sheets instead. Emboss a bird on black cardstock with the Sticky Powder, as before. Immediately cover it with a piece of gold leaf and rub to make sure it sticks to the melted powder.

Brush off the leftover gold leaf with a paint brush, for a gorgeous golden image. Try the same technique with a background stamp for a shimmering background. You can keep the leftover gold leaf for another project.

Thirdly, I stamped a feather stamp on the black cardstock and embossed it as before with the Sticky Powder. Immediately cover with Distress Glitter and rub lightly on top. Pour the remainder of the glitter back into the jar. Do one feather at a time because you don’t want to wait before sprinkling the melted powder with glitter. This way, you can get a glitter look with all your stamps, instead of having to cover the stamped image with adhesive and then sprinkle with glitter.

I layered the pieces together on a manila cardbase, inked with Frayed Burlap. All these three effects are hard to photograph, you really need to see them in real life. Here you can see the difference between the three techniques: the multi-coloured pearly shine of the Perfect Pearls, the bright shine of the gold leaf, and the vintage glitter look of the Distress Glitter. Try the same techniques on white or cream cardstock for a different look.

I embellished the card with a Tim Holtz idea-ology ticket, and stamped it with a sentiment using Archival Ink Jet Black.

The Philosophy Tag and Game Spinner were distressed with Distress Paint.
