TRY TO RESIST

Definition: Resist techniques in art use the incompatibility of two mediums to create layered effects with color and texture.

There are so many products that we can use to create a resist, Embossing Powder, Crayons, Molotow Pens, Masking Fluids and many more. We will be looking forward to seeing what you use!

Beulah  experimented with a distressed resist technique using Ranger’s Ultra Thick Embossing Powder

Everything is in full-bloom here in the Arizona desert and that inspired me to create a tag using my Tim Holtz Flower Garden Stamp Set. The lines of the stamps are very finely detailed but I wanted to make them look more distressed. I used a watercolor emboss-resist technique with a bit of a twist by combining ColorBox Frost White Pigment Ink with Ranger’s Ultra Thick Embossing Powder. The background stamping was made with the Tim Holtz Ledger Script Set and Ranger’s Watering Can Archival Ink. My embellishments include some Idea-ology Lace Trimmings and a Small Talk sticker.

Andrea finds Dina Wakley’s heavy body Ranger acrylic paints irresistible for projects like her altered board book.

One of my favorite paint-resist supplies is Washi tape, which you can peel off once the paint dries, or leave partially painted for a semi-translucent look. I layered up the cover of my board book with some current Washi faves (Doodlebug Springtime Stripe and Doodlebug Dainty Dots Spring Garden) and added a lovely background element using Tim Holtz’s Courtyard Frameworks die.  And the paint!  I can’t get enough of Dina Wakley’s Ranger line of heavy body acrylic paints.  The colors I use most frequently are Turquoise and Lime.

Anna-Karin loves resist techniques and used Ranger’s Transparent Gloss Texture Paste for her media board.

Resist techniques are favourites of mine and here I was going to do one with Gloss Texture Paste and Dina Wakley’s acrylic paints. However, I was writing something on the computer while waiting for the paint to dry a little, and forgot about the paint, so it dried completely and I couldn’t rub much of it off from the stenciled paste. Oops. I still like the subtle texture though. The cute birds come from Dina’s Scribbly Small Birdies set.

Barbara adores this technique and used  Ultra Thick Embossing Powder  to create a resist effect

The resist technique is  one of my favorite techniques! I started with the background for my skinny card, using Distress sprays in rainbow colors, Tim Holtz’s mini stencil Splatters  and  Ranger Ultra Thick Embossing Powder CLEAR to create a resist effect! Third step: I mist Black soot Distress spray over the whole  surface, making it appear my rainbow stains! I completed with lovely  Crazy Bird  and  a wonderful phrase stamped with Ranger Embossing Powder SUPER FINE WHITE on acetate.

Cathie  showcased different resist techniques using a  Collage Glue Stick and Clear Embossing Powder

I love the effect resist techniques give to a mixed media project. I used Ranger Emboss It Dabber along with Ranger Clear Embossing Powder  on my first canvas for a more precise and clear resist effect. On my second canvas, I used Ranger Collage Glue Stick with a baby wipe to create more of a “ghosting” resist effect.

Cheiron used Ranger White Embossing Powder along with Distress Spray Stains to create the resist on her background.

I love resist with embossing powder especially with Distress Spray Stains. What an easy way to create a background. This week I used the Tim Holtz Halftone and Rings Stamps to create my background and went over it with Distress Spray Stains in Mermaid Lagoon, Twisted Citron and a bit of Distress Mica Spray in Tarnished Brass. I finished off the tag with images from Dina Wakley’s Gals and Borders set.

Emma couldn’t resist using Ranger’s Super Fine Embossing Powder to create a batik style background.

I love the batik look and for my card, I created a faux batik background using embossing powder as a resist and one of Tim Holtz’s doily stamps. I added colour using Cracked Pistachio and Fossilized Amber Distress Spray Stains before attaching die cut Wildflowers and leaves stamped, and then inked with Wendy Vecchi’s Leaf Green Archival Ink. As a finishing touch, I attached a word band altered with Distress Paints.

Kath couldn’t resist creating a storage solution for her Mini Layering Stencil collection using a Distress Crayons Set 

I used Idea-ology Numbers Remnants Rubs , Ranger Clear Embossing Powder and Transparent Matte Texture Paste to create resist on my cover before colouring with Distress Crayons Set 1 and used a slightly damp kitchen towel to wipe back the resist areas

I started with a piece of Ranger Watercolor Paper and heat embossed some of Tim Holtz Wildflower Stamps using Clear Embossing Powder before inking with a selection of Distress Inks. I then used a hot iron and scrap paper to remove the melted powder. I then repeated the process leaving ghost like flowers in the background. I then randomly stamped script text and spritzed with Picket Fence Distress Spray and splattered with Dylusions Calypso Teal Ink before using Embossing Paste and a Dot Fade Stencil to complete the background.

Macarena couldn’t resist spring-y Ranger Distress Inks colors.

I made my tag using amazing Prima Paintables Watercolor paper which is so easy to color with Distress Inks leaving resist patterns as if were heat embossed. I mixed lots of vibrant and springy colors cause I wanted it to be fresh and light. I sprayed all the colors with water leaving drops signs and receiving irregular coloring which I like the most! I distressed the edges as well. The main element is the Watch cut out from a solid carton and paint with white gesso. After drying, I gave it 3 colorful Distress Inks and stamped some words with Archival Ink. I glued it with 3D dots and put watercolored Artful Flowers arround. I cut out the word Relaxing from Prima Paintables Watercolor paper and inked it with Salty Ocean Distress Ink. I placed another word inked with Picked Raspberry Distress Ink. Finally I some accents with White Extra Fine Sharpie Pen.

Maura is trying out Ranger’s transparent texture paste for the first time.

I am thinking of Spring and keep finding myself drawn to bright cheery colors like the ones in my new Tim Holtz Distress Crayons, Set 1 and Set 2 also by Ranger. My inspiration for the colors came from the little felt inchies I made a long time ago, and the tiny flowers seemed just perfect for my spring theme. I was feeling quite creative while working away on my tag, and out came my Simon Says Stamp Create die. I truly do have so much fun creating!

Meihsia was inspired to create a mixed media canvas wall hanging using Distress Paints,

I really love beautiful Spring weather even it is raining. On this canvas, I stenciled the sentiment with Tim Holtz Stencil and Distress Paints, then heat embossed it using ColorBox Clear Embossing Powder. The background then was colored with Koi watercolors. Some Prima Flowers and die cut butterflies were attached to decorate the lovely Spring scene.

I love making my own backgrounds and building up from an empty sheet, and this time I started with Ranger Transparent Texture Paste Gloss and the Honeycomb stencil for my art journal spread. This paste looks and feels a lot like clear embossing powder. I sprayed with Cracked Pistachio and Peacock Feathers Distress Spray Stain over it, some of it soaked underneath, and I love that messy look.

Zoey used Ranger Triangular Collage Glue Stick to create a glue resist effect…

I love to create ATCs and the Ranger Mini Distress Ink are perfect to create awesome effects on such a small surface! I added layers with Tim Holtz Idea-Ology Ephemera Emporium and Tim Holtz Idea-Ology Photobooth.
