Happy Earth Day! Upcycle Card

058

May Flaum here, ready to craft a super fun new card with you today. When it comes to reusing and recycling products I am all about using what I have! I love to give photo frames, boxes, and home décor items make-overs with some alcohol ink or paint, paper or paste. I love using my craft supplies to help me extend or give new life to all kinds of things! Today I’m going to share a super simple idea – reuse a coffee cup holder to create a gift card holding card!

The first thing you’ll need to do is get and cut open one side of the gift card. I want to make this card 4 1/4 x 5 1/2 so I trimmed a bit off the side.

This next part is simple – but important! First cover one side (only one side! with paper, washi tape as I did here, or anything else. This will be the decorative front of your card. Next, if you want to stitch around the edge (again, only working to cover one side!) go ahead and do that. At this time you’ll want to make a slit in the front of your card where you are going to slide this coffee cup holder through. Make it about 1/4″ bigger than the holder as you’ll need a bit of wiggle room. Put some liquid adhesive on the side you want for the front of your card, and slide it on through!

Above you can see how the front will look (Adhered down) and how when the card is opened the Starbucks/front of the coffee cup protector shows! If you’d like to make this a gift card holder simply glue the bottom and open side of the holder down.

Now you’re all set and ready to decorate!

I had a lot of fun with the new Amy Tangerine stamps, an assortment of my favorite dye ink pads, and a wink of stella pen to help create a little planter box out of the coffee cup holder shown on the front. Such fun! Just hand-draw your leaves and stems. This would also work well with dimensional die cuts or flower embellishments instead of stamps.

To finish things off I drew around my card with pen (stitching could also work) and added some sweet soft stamped hearts. I love how this came together – and I hope you’ve enjoyed my fun card.

  1. I love altering coffee sleeves and using them but not sure exactly how this is supposed to work. I would LOVE to see this on video being made. Love Mays work. TFS

  2. That is a very sweet card with all the flowers and hearts. I love to upcycle, too, like punching cute shapes from mirror like chip board of toothpaste boxes and other pretty packaging.

  3. VERY pretty card. I love Starbuck’s and what a super fun gift for a girlfriend. Thanks for sharing your wonderful creation.!
