Fall to Winter Journal Page with Shari

Hi everyone! Welcome back to the blog. It’s Shari here with my November Art Journal entry.

There is a feeling in the air that winter is fast approaching. It seems as soon as our leaves changed color, the wind kicked up and they they were lost… leaving the trees barren and brown.  I am left with but a memory of Fall…. imagining the cold days of Winter to come.

This is the inspiration for my journal page.

Shari Carroll Fall to Winter Journal

I started my page with Tim Holtz 8×8 Collage papers and started building up layers from there.

I’ve sewn the frame or negative space of my die cut leaves to the page using some zig zag and straight stitching. This is another great reason for creating a back to back style journal, you can manipulate your pages however you want before affixing them to the existing pages.

I’ve stamped my leaves with Distress Paints, Walnut Stain and Brushed Pewter (nice and shiny!)  To create my phrase, I used the Tim Holtz Seasonal and Chit Chat stickers. These always have the words I want to use!

I’ve shot a full process video… sped up a bit of course, to fit it all in. Enjoy!

Thanks for visiting the blog today, I’ll catch you next time!

  1. I was just about to go and get ready for work and saw this post – what a treat!! Your page is gorgeous, Shari! Love how you captured the change of seasons! No one uses brown shades as beautifully as you! AWESOME!!

  2. This is amazing. I am in awe! I love how you’re creating this journal, page by page and “in the bleak midwinter” when I’ve less to do, I want to create one, too! Thanks for sharing and I look forward to more!

  3. I don’t know how you keep coming up with these ideas, Shari, but I’m so glad you do! More wonderful pages. Thank you for holding the products up longer so we can see what you’re using, too.

  4. WOW! Thanks, Shari!!! I WON! I LOVE the online classes! How nice to get the notice from one of my favorite designers!

  5. Shari – such a beautiful piece! I so love watching you create. Wish you had a tutorial every day. Thank you for sharing your talents with us.

  6. Such a nice page. Your creative process is something I will never achieve. Did you plan the length of that paper on the left to match the numbers with the circles or did it just happen? I just love how it turned out. Thanks so much.

  7. I am in awe of your talent. This is a beautiful page. I am 80 years old and have never considered doing an art journal but you have inspired me to give it a try. I have decided I shall start in January. I know it will not compare with yours but that is the beauty of art, kind of like people, we all are different and so, too, is art. Thanks so much for the inspiration!!!

  8. It was your color palette that first caught my eye…exquisite…I had to watch the video to see how it was done. Your page is beautiful! And who does not love Tim Holtz and Ranger products? You certainly put them to good use! Thank you for sharing your creative process…it is inspiring!

  9. Oh, my goodness gracious (as my grandmother used to say). What a gorgeous use of materials and products. You captured the true essence of fall perfectly. It helped that I love these muted colors and tones, but I think I would have liked it anyway. Nicely done, as always.

  10. Love your art journaling–so fascinating to watch the videos!
3 questions: is the brush working better for mat medium? I noticed you used a scraper in an earlier video! Also do you rinse brush with water to clean when you are done? Would love to get a better look at the tattoo on your left wrist-would you mind showing it off with a still photo?
Thanks so much! I’m off to play with some Matt medium & tissue paper & paint & stamps:)
